About this listen

Ex-marine Shane Ryan is a ghost hunter whose troubled past haunts him almost as much as the ghosts he encounters in the line of duty. He's the best. And his reward for excellence? The punishment of being in high demand for jobs to eradicate the worst kind of ghosts - the kind that kill.

His latest assignment is an idyllic island setting with sunny skies, crystal blue ocean and a venerable old lighthouse that makes the scenery picture perfect...except for the malevolent, murderous ghosts marring the living portrait. If Amy, the owner, wasn't Marie Lafontaine's cousin, Shane would have steered clear of Squirrel Island and its diabolical dead. But Detective Lafontaine is his do-or-die friend. He'd do anything for her. Even face Dorothy, the undead Evilena who kills anyone invading her unholy domain. Add two shipwrecked couples to the mix and Shane has more trouble than he wants to handle.

Shane's mission is clear: rid the island of Dorothy and her band of undead while keeping his new charges alive. But how could he know that staying alive meant facing the worst evil ever imagined?

Pretty good.....

I loved the first book in this series and this was a pretty good ghost stort with good characters, however, some of the reactions presented by the living characters were, at times, a bit unbelievable. That being said, the story itself was great and spooky but I would only buy another if it was on sale. Great narration by Thom Bowers.

Another great book!

I am loving this series! More gore this time but still not overly done or for no reason. I hate when there's gore for the sake of gore. Shane is better than before and so is his predicament and the twist of one of the bad guys. Awesome story telling! The narrator seems better than last time too though it was the same guy. He had a good grasp of his accents this time. I enjoyed the bonus story at the end too. It didn't get much emotion or thought from Ewan (the Irish kid with the pipe) but it was a good story nonetheless.

The Lighthouse

Shane is at it again searching for and killing ghosts. This book is a ghost/horror book. It is well developed with many twists with believable and interesting characters that you get to know. This can be a standalone book. Shane an X-marine just cannot sit back and not get involved. When people are in trouble he will risk his life to help. He is proficient on killing the ghosts and they always seem to find Shane. I love the ghosts and characters. The narration draws you in and you won't want to stop listening to the book. I recommend this book.

Ron does it again!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Lighthouse to be better than the print version?

I love both but, in this day and age, time is at a premium. Audible has brought "reading" back into my life.

What did you like best about this story?

Although it was the second in the series, it really stood on it's own. It was great to see Shane back in action. The storyline kept me engaged, and I found it interesting.

What does Thom Bowers bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Thom's narration really adds to the overall experience of the story. Shane Ryan would not be the same without Thom to bring Ron's character to life. The same applies to the other recurring characters. I especially like the accents he uses.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

His past haunts him almost as much as the ghosts he encounters in the line of duty.

Any additional comments?

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

Awesome series, terrible narrator

The narrator COULD be good if he would let go of the notion that scary books have to be read with over-emphasis on so many words. He even goes beyond, he'll do so to practically each word in some sentences. It's highly annoying and detracts from an otherwise good story.
Horror novels about ghosts are difficult to write because many seem cheesey but Ron Ripley does a great job. With how desensitized our culture is to images of death in news or online and slasher-type films, ghost stories are hard pressed to incite true fear, although if faced with one I think everyone would poop themselves. These two books so far have provided just the right amount of give and take to create tension for the reader.
If you can just look past the cornball voice "over-acting" you will be pleasantly surprised by a good creepy story or things that do more than go bump in the night.

The Lighthouse in a a creepy Island

Th story is filled with paranormal, demons, chills and spills. It has been the best book I have read by Ron since he retired from the Marine Corps. If you want ali of the above plus action, then this is the book to listen to. I recommend this to all teens and above. Not suitable for the smaller children.

More ghosts

Not as exciting as book one. But close. Some of the conversations (between the living) not believable.
