About this listen

Plagued by misfortune, Ingrid Norling treks into the woods to clear her head. She emerges a monster-slayer, the shaken executioner of a creature so ferocious that even the king's strongest warriors could not destroy it. In a land that reveres swords and worships strength, this accidental heroism earns Inge an audience at court and an ill-fated prize: King Halvard impulsively adopts her and names her as his heir.

Under constant guard to prevent her escape, Inge confronts the ignoble underbelly of the royal court: a despotic king, a clueless princess, a proud warrior, and a dangerous intrigue. As secrets unravel and the castle becomes an elaborate deathtrap, Inge must keep her wits close and her weapons closer.

The monster in the woods was only the beginning.

Deathmark is such a beautiful story. I love the various themes and the slow burn romance. We're taken on such a fun adventure, discovering secrets alongside our main characters. It's beautiful.
the narrator did a wonderful job, and I loved how she was spot on with the sass of Nell. Great emotion, vibrancy, and performance for this amazing story.

I remember slogging through Beowulf in AP English in high school and loathing it. This book is so fantastic that I’m tempted to go back and read Beowulf again (I won’t though).

The characters are great- all have depth to them and develop as the story progresses. The story itself is engaging too. I listened to the whole thing in two days and wished there was more. It has a bit of a fairy tale feel to it, and you become very immersed in the world the author creates.

Even the prologue note by the author was so lovely and heartwarming!

The narrator was fantastic. Each character is discernible and she does a wonderful job of bringing the story to life.

So glad to have found this book!

Didn’t like Beowulf, LOVED this

I honestly did not anticipate the ending… It was awesome! Completely clean, funny, intriguing, dry humored, and fantastical

I first read The Legendary Inge back in 2021. My notes simply say “Loved it.” I read it again in 2022 and made note that I “Love that book.” Here, for my third read, I’m finally writing a review.

Having heard wonderful things about the audiobook, I finally listened to it myself. And yes, it was good. Even having read it two previous times, I had a hard time pausing it. In typical Kate fashion, it drew me in and kept me engaged from the first moment to the last.

Violence: Well, I will say that listening to it caused me to pay more close attention to some parts I rather skipped over the first two times, lol. There is a bit of nastiness involving the monsters and some fighting among men as well…but this is a turbulent time of war. Basically, don’t read it if you are squeamish, and I wouldn’t suggest it for a child under 13.

Romance: clean. You’ll find a bit at the very end, but this more plot-oriented than romance-focused. Kate seamlessly wove it in and kept me interested in both aspects the whole way through.

Loved it!

Loved it. Kate Stradling is a new author for me. However, I give her credit from pulling me out of my book slump. This light-hearted story made laugh, swoon, and respect the Stradling's treatment of characters and plot devices. Narrator kept me entertained the entire time.

A Pleasent Surprise
