About this listen

The Legend of Victor Standish - think True Blood meets Super 8 meets The Walking Dead.

Beware French Quarter nights. Every city has its secrets. New Orleans more than most.

New Orleans is the most haunted city in America where Voodoo was big business, slavery even more so, and no government official or newspaper dares to tell the truth.

Into this strange world arrives the street orphan, Victor Standish, from Charon's Greyhound. Charon has to keep up with the times...the End Times. Victor has survived mean streets, but now he must cope with Zombie Love and the haunted French Quarter.

If Voodoo, vampires, and the Apocalypse fail to kill him, he must survive the deadly love of the Victorian ghoul, Alice Wentworth. And why does the Angel of Death keep following him?

Lee Harpster nails a never-say-die street gypsy

What did you love best about The Legend of Victor Standish?

I loved how Lee Harpster caught the personalities of the various characters. His Victorian Alice Wentworth captured her haunted essence. He switched accents from Old West to Victorian to street urban without missing a beat.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved Victor Standish and his refusal to give into the fear and doubts of his life. His sense of humor made me laugh repeatedly.

What does Lee Harpster bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Harpster brings a depth of performance to his narration. His comic timing makes the puns and snarky comments of Victor come alive.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extremes. I just had a great time.

Lee Harpster Delivers!

What made the experience of listening to The Legend of Victor Standish the most enjoyable?

It's always interesting to "hear" the characters you've fallen in love with, and this audio book is extra special. I've "known" these characters for a while and it was enjoyable hearing them come to life thanks to Mr. Harpster. There were numerous characters and accents and he did a pretty great job keeping them straight. Listening also helps with details I miss while reading.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Victor and Alice are the standouts, of course. He's a kid with a big heart and more courage than is sometimes wise. I'm partial to Sam, too. He's definitely the person you want to have at your back.

What about Lee Harpster’s performance did you like?

Keeping track of all the different characters, their accents and individuality-a massive job and he did a pretty great job of it. He also helped me learn how to pronounce a few words.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Take a deep breath and don't let go!

Any additional comments?

I'd recommend this book (in any format) to those who love a great adventure, science fiction/fantasy/modern western/gothic/romance/horror. Yeah, I think that might cover it. Really, Roland's books cover lots of genres and should appeal to a wide variety of readers.

OK if you’re a 14 yer old boy

Pretty lame story and narrated equally lame. Ridiculous premise, characters and dialogue. Unless you’re a kid, don’t bother.
