Story
Ishmael Reed's electrifying first novel zooms readers off to the crazy, ominous kingdom of HARRY SAM - a miserable and dangerous place ruled for thirty years by Harry Sam, a former used car salesman who wields his power from his bathroom throne. In a land of a thousand contradictions peopled by cops and beatniks, black nationalists and white liberals, the crusading Bukka Doopeyduk leads a rebellion against the corrupt Sam in a wildly uproarious and scathing satire....

Story
In 1920s America, a plague is spreading fast. From New Orleans to Chicago to New York, the "Jes Grew" epidemic makes people desperate to dance, overturning social norms in the process. Anyone is vulnerable and when they catch it, they'll bump and grind into a frenzy. Working to combat the Jes Grew infection are the puritanical Atonists, a group bent on cultivating a "Talking Android", an African American who will infiltrate the unruly black communities and help crush the outbreak.

"Folks. This here is the story of the Loop Garoo Kid. A cowboy so bad he made a working posse of spells phone in sick. A bullwhacker so unfeeling he left the print of winged mice on hides of crawling women. A desperado so onery he made the Pope cry and the most powerful of cattlemen shed his head to the Executioner's swine." And so begins the HooDoo Western by Ishmael Reed, author of Mumbo Jumbo and one of America's most innovative and celebrated writers. Reed demolishes white American history and folklore as well as Christian myth in this masterful satire of contemporary American life.

I was, in life, to be a gambler, a risk-taker, a swashbuckler, a knight. I accepted, then and there, my place in the world. I was a fighter of windmills. I was a chaser of whales. I was Not Sidney Poitier. Not Sidney Poitier is an amiable young man in an absurd country. The sudden death of his mother orphans him at age eleven, leaving him with an unfortunate name, an uncanny resemblance to the famous actor, and, perhaps more fortunate, a staggering number of shares in the Turner Broadcasting Corporation.

Brilliantly portrayed by a novelist with "a talent for hyperbole and downright yarning unequaled since Mark Twain", (Saturday Review), this slave's-eye view of the Civil War exposes America's racial foibles of the past and present with uninhibited humor and panache. Mixing history, fantasy, political reality, and comedy, Ishmael Reed spins the tale of three runaway slaves and the master determined to catch them.

Story
It's the 1980s and the politics of the New York theater scene have taken yet another turn.
Masochism is out and feminism is in, Jews are out and Germans are in, race is out and gender is in, and everyone's fighting (and rewriting) for a piece of the pie. In this hilarious, devastating, but also deeply sympathetic novel, Ishmael Reed turns characters on their backs, sides, tops and bottoms to expose the multiple hypocrisies at the heart of American culture.

Richard Elster was a scholar - an outsider - when he was called to a meeting with government war planners, asked to apply "ideas and principles to such matters as troop deployment and counterinsurgency". We see Elster at the end of his service. He has retreated to the desert, "somewhere south of nowhere", in search of space and geologic time. There he is joined by a filmmaker, Jim Finley, intent on documenting his experience.

Percival Everett's The Trees is a must-listen that opens with a series of brutal murders in the rural town of Money, Mississippi. When a pair of detectives from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrive, they meet expected resistance from the local sheriff, his deputy, the coroner, and a string of racist White townsfolk. The murders present a puzzle, for at each crime scene there is a second dead body: that of a man who resembles Emmett Till.

In Othello, Shakespeare creates powerful drama from a marriage between the exotic Moor Othello and the Venetian lady Desdemona. Shakespeare builds many differences into his hero and heroine, including race, age, and cultural background. Yet most audiences believe the couple’s strong love would overcome these differences were it not for Iago, who sets out to destroy Othello.

Publisher's summary
"The Last Days of Louisiana Redblends paradox, hyperbole, understatement and signifyin' so expertlyyou can almost hear a droll black voice telling the tales as you readit." - The New Republic
When Papa LaBas (private eye, noonday HooDoo, and hero of Reed's Mumbo Jumbo) comes to Berkeley, California, to investigate the mysterious death of Ed Yellings, owner of the Solid Gumbo Works, he finds himself fighting the rising tide of violence propagated by Louisiana Red and those militant opportunists, the Moochers.
A HooDoo detective story and a comprehensive satire on the explosive politics of the '60s, The Last Days of Louisiana Red exposes the hypocrisy of contemporary American culture and race politics.

In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

A Difficult but Significant Novel
Would you consider the audio edition of The Last Days of Louisiana Red to be better than the print version?
I think this audio edition of louisiana red is really impressive, as it really emphasizes the cadence with which Reed writes.
What other book might you compare The Last Days of Louisiana Red to and why?
Mumbo Jumbo, other novels from this post-modern black era, etc. I think this novel is so contextual to the era it was written in, really that era is the only thing I can compare it to.

BEEN THERE, DID THAT, GOT A T-SHIRT TO PROVE IT!
I've had this book in my Wish List for a very long time, not buying it because I was conflicted about the content. Although I'm black, I don't particularly care for black literature. Not because the works aren't good - it's just that many such stories hit too close to home and make me uncomfortable reliving certain events in my actual existence as a black American.
OK, so I finally download the book today. Immediately I knew this wasn't going to be a great experience for me. The story is written in a way that is reminiscent of the newly emerging black authors and playwrights in the late 1960s, early 1970s. At that time I was a theater major at Howard University. A top drama school, the curriculum suddenly went from staging works like "Antigone" and "Othello" to original ground-breaking plays by new, often militant, playwrights who had more social conscience than talent. Everything about this book reminds me of the creative cacophony in which black artists from all mediums found themselves during a time of unprecedented political and social upheaval. We were faced with black awareness, female empowerment, and fighting a war that we didn't believe in. This book pretty much sums up that era from a black American point of view. However, I'm not sure how relevant this book is today. I can't even figure out what demographic would be interested in the story which unfolds here. It is a hard read, bogged down in the ideological rhetoric of the time. I often found myself getting frustrated with the dated sounding text. The only real saving grace is the narrator who "keeps it real" while maintaining an intelligent and skilled delivery.
That said, there are people who would likely find this book interesting and fresh. It is not a bad book - I just don't like it. When I listen to or read a book, I want to be either entertained or educated. Here, I just felt it was "déjà vu, all over again". If this book was a movie, the tag line would be "Gumbo Reheated". But, try it - you might like it. I make an excellent seafood and andouille gumbo. There ARE times that it tastes better the next day, although I wouldn't take a chance on it a generation later! 😄

Disappointing in a couple ways
SIGH, I love Mumbo Jumbo, but this sequel is just disappointing. The biggest issue is that misogyny (which was not entirely absent from MJ) now takes center stage (and the spiritual detective angle from MJ is under-used here, too).
