Story
After the Great War that divided the peoples, the kingdoms of men plunged into a Dark Age that lasted 500 years. To heal the lands and restore the light, the great kings decreed that magic and all that is magical, be it creature, man, or device, shall be cleansed to dust. The cleansing raged for so long that no human could recall a time without it and it is in this time that the Dark Lord Sathar returned from the dark beyond.

Stanek does it again!
As a librarian and avid reader, I find it increasingly difficult to find good books. I give this book the highest rating as the most enjoyable I have listened of the past 20 or so audio books I have enjoyed. The series may begin a bit slow, but things get going soon enough. Near the end of this second book it all starts to come together, and it is wonderful.
There are parts worth hearing again and again, the chase scene in the forest comes to mind as do many others. A few delightful surprises and laughs as well. They are worth listening to, regardless of your tastes in books, you will enjoy them.
This is as good as it gets. You owe yourself a listen.

I love this series
I bought the first two books based on Audible recommendations, and bought the second two books because the books are so good. In this one the story picks up from the first, and keeps moving to the end. Hang on to your seat and try to catch your breath because it's a great ride. Much better than the first, which was good, but this is incredible. It is worth every penny and minute of your time.

Great second book!
This book was a great follow-up to the first one. It continues the story and is in many ways a better story. Like with the first, I couldn't stopped listening and looked forward more and more to quiet times when I could listen. I am amazed by how much I care about the characters. I can't wait to start the third one.

Most enchanting series this decade
I have listened to about 120 audiobooks in the past five years and this one is arguably the best, even better than the first in the series. Compelling story, beautifully written and by far the best adaptation to an audiobook because the reader catches so much of the essence of the characters. I believe that the reader made this book better than the written word can possibly cover because he brings the story to life. I have listened to this book again and again and again. And so should you.

Better than the first book!
I enjoyed the continuing story of Vilmos, Seth, Adrina, and the others. This book is even better because it builds on the pace of the first, shows more to the characters and their hardships. As in the first book, there's a lot to like and the reader is amazingly good.

Enter the kingdoms and get swept away!
I love multi-book stories. I love that the story continues from the last pages of the previous book. It is so good I couldn't wait to hear the rest in the series. The characters are worth caring about. The story is wonderfully written and well read. The pacing is very good, with a lot of heart pounding scenes. The twists are well done, and it all kept me listening. Looking forward to the next ones.

Engaging Listen
As other readers have said, the first book got things going and this one brings it all together. I had to fight with my teens for the ipod so I could get to the end of the story. For the next one we've decided we're going to hook it up to speakers and all listen at the same time. Should be fun!
What continues to make this such a good find for me are the characters. I've enjoyed watching Adrina go through the many changes, and Vilmos maturing somewhat as he continue on with Xith. The world setting is expansive as well. The culture of the kingdoms is very rich, as is the culture of the elves.
The story continues to have mystery as well as fantasy. The mystery is what makes this non-fantasy reader very happy.
As with the previous book, I think this book owns all five stars easily. Again, a well written and delightful listen.
The third book will be released May 31 and we are very excited!

Fascinating and entertaining
My first introduction to Robert Stanek's amazing world was through The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches book 1. It was an excellent listen indeed. I decided to listen to this second one as it seemed a direct continuation of the story, and thankfully it is. In fact, this second book brings the story lines together, and you get a glimpse of where everything is going from here. The quality of the audio is superb. This book will not disappoint. Bravo, Robert!
