About this listen

Who did it and why?

Poet, movie star, revolutionary - Tupac Amaru Shakur was the most popular rapper in the world. No one symbolized the violence at the heart of gangsta rap more than Tupac, and he ultimately fell victim to that violence, gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas at the age of 25.

This raw, no-holds-barred account discloses new information about the unsolved murder of Tupac: the failed investigation, the rap wars, the killing of Biggie Smalls, the Bloods-Crips connection, and the many possible motives leading to the murder that rocked the music world.

Dead of alive, Tupac lives on.

I got this to get the "whole story" on Tupac's death, because there was always bits of info and I never knew what the actual facts were. This book was really informative, it represented the facts and covered everything from the night of his death, motives for it, and it also discussed whether he's dead or alive. I love Tupac and although parts of it were sad it brought all the circumstances around his death together, which was a real plus. I definitely recommend this audiobook for all Tupac fans!

Great Research and Writing

The author did a great job researching and writing this book. It was informative but tells the story of Tupac. She outlines the night of the shooting and gives great informative descriptions of the main people in play. I love rap and hip hop music, I've listened to it almost as long as I can remember. I can only imagine where rap and hip-hop would be if Tupac and Biggie never been killed. That being said, this documentary was really fascinating to me.

The narrator did an excellent job!

Cathy Scott is one of the best & this proves it!

Scott sets down a piece of work that is informative, detailed, factual, and an interesting read. Her research is impeccable. THIS is what a true crime audiobook should be!!

This is some heavy research. Very impressive!

What really stands out about this book is the research. It's painstaking. The attention to detail is extraordinary. Most authors blow off this kind of detail, but Ms. Scott's extra effort helped me feel like I was there, riding in Tupac's car, or with police detectives. I'm more of a fan of crime stories and detective work than of rap music, but the story she tells about Tupac's life and background really makes me relate to and like the guy. Still, it is the exhaustive research and details of the investigation that made me unable to stop listening. Even if you know nothing of rap or Tupac, like me, this is a fascinating listen.

Is this read by Siri?!

The narrator sounds like a robot. I can’t believe this was a real person reading it. I love 2Pac, the book got great reviews so I downloaded it. I didn’t learn anything though. Because I have always loved him and who he was, I knew everything that was presented in this book. I think maybe people have it such great reviews because they felt like bad reviews meant bad reviews for 2Pac. Not a bad book but a horrible audiobook. If you don’t know much about Pac, you might like this book.

A touchstone in modern music history

Tupac's music has never really interested me. And he doesn't seem at all like the sort of person I would want to have anything to do with. But his music and his person are an important cultural touchstone for modern music. His murder, in a drive by shooting, is a key event in rap/hiphop history. And by telling the details of the history, this is an important book.

Author Cathy Scott is a journalist from Las Vegas, where the murder occurred. At the time, and in the following years, she reported on the event, interviewed key people, and followed up on the fallout. This book is a culmination of her years of interviews and reporting. It is in depth and interesting throughout.

The book opens with the night of the murder, before going into the details of the investigation. The middle third then goes back and tells Tupac's story - who he was, what his music meant, his history with guns and gangs and the supposed east-west rivalry. It tells of his previous gun shot injuries, which he claimed was an attempt on his life staged as a mugging.

The book then rounds out looking at the fallout of Tupac's murder - further murders and death of witnesses and friends, and potential revenge killings such as the death of Biggy Smalls. The book also addresses, briefly, the conspiracy theory of Tupac not being dead, explaining why this is not a realistic idea.

It is extremely well researched and well written. Engaging throughout.

Narration by Elise Black is good. Well paced, clear, interesting and engaging. No issues at all with her narration.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this review voluntarily.

Great Read

The Killing of Tupac Shakur was a great read by Cathy Scott. This is a very raw account of the murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls. This book had a lot of new information about both murders and what may have led to the murders. This was a great read.

Can't stop thinking about it.

Super interesting from start to finish. I've seen a few documentaries on 2pac & Biggie, but none that were this detailed. Awesome! *****

Great biography

This really told the true and often misunderstood story of Tupac Shakur's life and death. The author doesn't pull any punches about his crimes but she also tells you about his gifts and his enormous potential which was so quickly snuffed out. This is a very good bio for anyone who wants to know more about this very talented young man. *****
