About this listen

A dark family secret

When Alice’s father dies after a tragic hit-and-run, his death stirs up unanswered questions about her childhood. Who was her mother, why did her father never speak of the past, and why can’t she remember anything before the age of seven?

An island cut off

But when she receives an anonymous letter containing a photograph of a refurbished gothic guesthouse surrounded by water, and an invitation to stay, old memories fight to resurface.

Alice has visited before. She is certain of it.

Who will survive?

Convinced the clues to her past lie at the hotel, she checks in. But once on the island, a wild storm rages, waves crash violently into the rocks, and the house is cut off by the roaring sea.

Then two guests are found dead. And the hotel owner is missing. Will Alice ever uncover her secret past?

And will anyone leave the island alive?

An utterly gripping thriller that will leave you listening long into the night! Fans of The Guest List and The Sanatorium will love this nail-biting story.

Twists were so smart, satisfying!

I loved this book! It was hard to stop listening at the end of a chapter when I was ready to go to sleep. The twists and turns were beautifully interwoven in this chilling gothic thriller. I would recommend you not listen to this book if you're by yourself late at night.

I'm not one to re-read a book, but The Island House may be an exception. Amanda Brittany's book would DEFINITELY make a great movie! Two thumbs up!

Eh... Predictable

These types of mysteries are usually my favorite kinds. This falls a little flat, follows the outlines for these. Including the typical severe thunderstorm during the build up. Had this figured out pretty early on, but endured to the end.

It's a little dull until the last 4 hours. Couldn't give it more than 3 stars because of the narrator. She does the worst voices for children I've ever heard. For some reason when she does the Part 1,2,3 parts the volume goes up insanely. Never knew when those were coming.

Ridiculous story

Started off really good and I loved the narration - and thought it starts off with great potential for a moody atmospheric mystery it just becomes so silly. The last bit is almost comically bad. You don’t just have to suspend reality but rather want to listen to a childishly written make-believe story. I’m bummed that I spent my time waiting for it to improve.

Frustratingly fat phobic

I really liked this book, great story line and while I guessed the killer early on, the twists made it interesting. My problem is with the writer continually pointing out one villainous characters’ weight and making it seem like a symptom of their inner corruption. Was it necessary to point out that when she struggled, her weight went up? This is just lazy.

Every other characters’ body size was mentioned once or twice, as needed to describe a setting, but for crying out loud, why are you pulling body issues into a thriller novel? The writer obviously has no idea how difficult it is to raise daughters, in spite of writing a book about it. I don’t and won’t recommend this book, for this reason.
