Publisher's summary

The Oslo Detectives are back in another slice of gripping, dark Nordic Noir, and their new colleague has more at stake than she's prepared to reveal....

When a dead man is lifted from the freezing waters of Oslo Harbour just before Christmas, Detective Lena Stigersand's stressful life suddenly becomes even more complicated. Not only is she dealing with a cancer scare, a stalker and an untrustworthy boyfriend, but it seems both a politician and Norway's security services might be involved in the murder.

With her trusted colleagues, Gunnarstranda and Frølich, at her side, Lena digs deep into the case and finds that it not only goes to the heart of the Norwegian establishment, but it might be rather too close to her personal life for comfort. Dark, complex and nail-bitingly tense, The Ice Swimmer is the latest and most unforgettable instalment in the critically acclaimed Oslo Detective series, by the godfather of Nordic Noir.

Unrealistic

While I enjoyed the narrator and her melodic Norwegian accent, the story was totally removed from reality. In a book which clearly attempts a socio-critical look at Norwegian society this breaks the illusion. The main female character does as she pleases, has a massive attitude, treats people like crap and somehow we are supposed to emphathise with her and understand that she doesn't get fired? I found her unlikeable and it seriously affected how much I liked the book.

Convoluted Back Story

This was a frustrating listen! I listen to a lot of Nordic Noir, but really struggled with the names and characters in this story. The plot/back story was so convoluted and only revealed in fragments that it was not compelling. Not sure why I finished the whole book.
