About this listen

A riveting atmospheric suspense debut that explores the dark side of a small town and asks: How can we uncover the truth when we keep lying to ourselves?

“Herrera has a gift for drawing vivid characters and rich settings. A voicey and compelling debut that is not to be missed.”—Karin Slaughter

After reckless behavior costs NYPD detective Leigh O’Donnell her job and her marriage, she returns with her four-year-old daughter to her beautiful hometown of Copper Falls, Ohio. Leigh had stayed away for more than a decade—even though her brother and a trio of loving uncles still call it home—because, while the town may seem idyllic, something rotten lies at its core. Three men in town have drowned in what Leigh suspects to be a triple homicide. She hopes that by finding out who killed them, she just might get her life back on course.

Headstrong and intuitive, Leigh isn’t afraid to face a killer, but she has to do more than that to discover the truth about what happened to those men. She must unravel a web of secrets going back generations, and, in doing so, plumb the darkness within herself.

Perfect for fans of Mare of Easttown, this taut debut is a haunting look at how the search for truth often leads back to the most unlikely of places.

Just Okay

Decent story, but expected more in the development of the plot. The ending seemed incomplete.

Wonderful!

What a fantastic debut! Hererra manages to take the old comfy sweater of a good crime novel, unravel it, and reknit it into something both familiar and unexpected. I don’t know that I’ve ever read another book that can embody everything you want in great pulp fiction and press the reader to awareness of social issues that are extremely relevant. While the story takes a beat to gain momentum, you can feel the author’s voice develop and her writing style come to life as the story unfolds. As someone who lives very close to the fictional town of Copper Falls, I am also impressed with Hererra’s beautifully articulated sense of place. The complex emotional and sensory details that are so distinctive of growing up in the Midwest and the unique experience of returning to such a place are so artfully well constructed that I can practically taste the air in Cooper Falls. Being born and raised in the Cleveland area, I do have to take issue with the narrator’s interpretation of a “Cleveland” accent versus a “Toledo” accent, but these are nuances that are probably only noticeable if you have spent half of your life in each of these places. Overall, a wonderful beginning to Hererra’s writing career, and I look forward to seeing what other gems she might offer us in the future. Definitely worth a listen!

Great story and wonderful reader

I love a book that keeps me guessing until almost the last page. Ms Herrera is a natural sleuth and story teller and Ms. Lowman does an excellent job of bringing Leigh and the towns people of Copper Falls, Ohio to life. As I got further into the audio book I found myself driving slower and sitting in my car at work listening to the book instead of actually going into work. Now my only question is, when will the next one to be released?

I kept waiting

I’m sorry because I really wanted to like this book. I just couldn’t though! I kept waiting for the BIG story to be unveiled but everything became rather flat.

Awesome read!

This book kept me engaged until the last line (please please please let there be a next novel) Herrera’s work kept me guessing all the way through the dynamic plot and kept me guessing till the last minute. The rich story that unfolded in Cooper Falls was enthralling and kept me wanting to learn more about the town and the people and be truly invested in the outcome. I can’t wait to read Mrs. Herrera’s future work!
