About this listen

In the dying days of the war in Europe, Nazi scientists manage to put an atomic bomb into orbit. Only a miracle prevented them from bringing it back down on New York.

Thirteen years later, with the bomb still in orbit, the Black Sun, a secret neo-Nazi organization with considerable financial and technological resources at their command, builds the Seawolf 4, a super-sub capable of traveling under the Arctic icecap. From there, it will transmit the order for the satellite bomb to descend on the USSR while, at the same time, launching an A-bomb armed cruise missile at an American city in the hopes of starting World War III.

The only hope of stopping them are the new US nuclear subs, Nautilus and Skate. Can one of them find the Seawolf 4 in time? Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler fans will enjoy this tension-filled thriller that combines real world events in the '40s and '50s with a dash of science fiction.

Excellent!

Great story! I didn't want to put it down and go back to work. I really enjoyed how each chapter was explained on what was fact and fiction.

Patience is the foundation for this audible,

There are many question I would pose to t he author, the main one would be his choice of narrator. The attempt to use a German accent at times and not at others was confusing in the beginning. As I became more familiar with the characters it, I was able to ascertain who was who. Part of the title led me to believe this was part of a continuing series, yet this is the only book, so far. The story had its good points and bad points. Attention to detail was excellent in some points about submarines and was also a bit far fetched in others, my opinion as a retired submariner. Overall, a good read, actually a good listen which I will have to listen again as I tend to reread a good book. I would recommend this book, even as an audio book simply because it merges fiction with possible reality of the time. This book could have become a good series.

A great mix of fiction and fact from history

I got this audiobook because I enjoyed Dietmar Wehr’s military sci-fi books. His style is very evident in this book, but it works well in this post-WWII epic story. Luke Daniels does a great job performing this book. Not only was the story very well done, but the author provides a ‘Behinds the Scene” recap at the end where he discusses what is fiction, fact, and rumor in the story and his sources for what he is claiming as fact. I will continue to follow and buy his future work.

What if the Nazis...

The Hunt for Seawolf 4 is a historical fiction novel set in the last days of World War II and recounts an interesting “what if” tale of the last fragments of the Nazi regime as the war ended and they fled from Germany. It’s part historical fact and part creative storytelling with a bit of conspiracy theory thrown in -- but all great reading. After the book is over, the author sorts fact from fiction in an interesting (and educational) review of what is actually part of the historical record and what was created for the novel.

When you get right down to it, Dietmar Wehr just tells a damn good story. I’ve read at least 8 of his novels and his style has been fairly consistent through all of them. In The Hunt for Seawolf 4, the plot unfolds in snapshots or small scenes that skip forward in time; each scene reveals key events, conversations, and characters in the story. There is no ultra-immersive world-building or characters with incredible depth and development, but there is both a very active narrative and uncommonly compelling story. It’s reminiscent of a theatrical production and I think it works very well, particularly for this “historic” work.

Special thanks to Dietmar Wehr, who gave me this book as part of his mailing list promotion. If you like his work, I strongly suggest finding Wehr's website and joining his mailing list where you can find his latest updates, promotions, and occasionally free books!

Luke Daniels always delivers a solid performance when narrating. Though he isn’t my favorite narrator out there, I’ll always give any of his books a shot if I see his name -- I know that the narration will be good. His narration of The Hunt for Seawolf 4 is well done and he tackles a variety of unique character voices, some with difficult accents. My only critique is that I think he struggles with some of the female characters in the story, but overall, it’s very good.

A great listen!

This is the first audible book I have listened to.
However I have read many books by this author, mostly sci-fi, and found them to be great reads, fully engaging my attention and making it so that I don’t want to put them down until finished.
I found this audible book to be similarly engaging, although the subject matter is different, the plot is very believable, remarkably so, especially when you listen to the end chapter (20), where the author sites the real life occurrences which he has used to put together this story.
Would I recommend this title, yes I would completely, although I have to confess to not being totally sold on the audible book format, but that is a separate issue from the story/book/audio book.

An engaging pseudo-historical story

In many ways The Hunt for Seawolf felt more like a podcast documentary than a book. This is thanks to the author's inclusion of actual historical events into the framework of the story. It's a fun book with an audio performance that pays homage to the movie reels from the story's era. I admit to rescheduling a meeting to keep listening.
