About this listen
This "hugely entertaining, riveting page-turner" (Louise Penny) follows the complicated relationship between mother and daughter as they face off in the Olympics—and into a ride they can barely control.
Maggie Atwood and Becky McCabe, mother and daughter, both champion riders, vowed to never, ever, go up against one another.
Until the tense, harrowing competitions leading to the Paris Olympics.
Mother and daughter share a dream: to be the best horsewoman in the world.
Coronado is Maggie’s horse. An absolutely top-tier Belgian warmblood. Sky is Becky’s horse. A small, speedy Dutch warmblood.
Only James Patterson could bring you such breakneck speed, hair-raising thrills and spills.
Only hall of fame sportswriter Mike Lupica could make it all so real.

Story
Fifteen-year-old equestrian prodigy Roan Montgomery has only ever known two worlds: inside the riding arena and outside of it. Both, for as long as she can remember, have been ruled by her father, who demands strict obedience in all areas of her life. The warped power dynamic of coach and rider extends far beyond the stables, and Roan's relationship with her father has long been inappropriate. She has been able to compartmentalize that dark aspect of her life, ruthlessly focusing on her ambitions as a rider heading for the Olympics, just as her father had done.

Story
Monty Roberts' father, a traditional horse trainer, had taught his son to dominate a horse in order to "break" it. But when he was 13, Monty made a discovery that changed his life. As he watched a mare tame a rebellious colt, Monty saw that she was speaking to it through eye and body movements. Astonished, Monty realized that he could train horses by using their language, speaking to them in ways that would form trust and understanding. Developing techniques based on what he learned from the horses around him, Monty embarked on a remarkable career - one that would bring him international fame as the real Horse Whisperer.

Story
In the wake of World War II, as turmoil and chaos were giving way to optimism, Americans were looking for inspiration and role models showing that it was possible to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top—and they found it in Stymie, the failed racehorse plucked from the discard heap by trainer Hirsch Jacobs. Taking listeners on a crowd-pleasing ride with Stymie and Jacobs, Out of the Clouds unwinds a real-life Horatio Alger tale of a dauntless team and its working-class fans who lived vicariously through the stouthearted little colt they embraced as their own.

Critic reviews
“Patterson and Lupica manage to get deep into the world of high-level show jumping and also, incredibly for two men, deep into the lives of three generations of strong women. I don’t know what’s more compelling - the white-knuckle descriptions of the horse shows in the lead-up to the Olympics or the tense, complex relationships among the three women. We grow to care deeply about these horsewomen. This is a hugely entertaining, riveting, page-turner of a book. A thrilling and thoughtful read.” (Louise Penny, number one New York Times best-selling author of the Chief Inspector Gamache series)
“The Horsewoman is more than a thriller - it’s an eye-opening ride through the high-stakes world of equestrian show-jumping. Patterson and Lupica make a great team, writing at a full gallop and with faultless timing of the lives of three fearless women connected by blood, competition, and a passion for fast horses.” (Carl Hiaasen, best-selling author of Squeeze Me)

Hockey is Conor's life. His whole life. He'll say it himself, he's a hockey beast. It's his dad's whole life too - and Conor is sure that's why his stepmom, Jenny, left. There are very few things Conor and his dad love more than the game, and one of those things is their Doberman, Sinbad. When Sinbad is diagnosed with cancer, Conor chooses to put his hockey lessons and practices on hold so they can pay for Sinbad's chemotherapy. But without hockey to distract him, Conor begins to notice more. Like his dad's crying bouts, and his friend's difficult family life.

Total immersion into show jumping world
Even though fiction, the story line and characters were well developed and believable. The competition was intense and suspenseful. At times, I felt as if I were on the horse with the rider. Experience the thrills and disappointments of show jumping from your armchair. Readers were great. No trouble knowing which of the many players were speaking at any given time.

Couldn’t Stop Listening!
I typically “read” James Patterson’s books (as I like the feel of turning the pages of a book). However, I already had several books on my shelf waiting for me…and, I was going to be traveling over 1000 miles on a trip, via automobile. This Audible sounded like it would keep me engaged. Well, it MORE than kept me engaged: I often stayed up way past my “planned” time to listen to “just one more chapter!” Excellent characters (narrator made them come alive) portrayed well by Narrator. The story line & plot revolves around women riders in Show Jumping (horses), so that also is an interest of mine.
If horses and riders are your thing, then you will love this listen…and won’t be able to resist just “one more chapter!”

I’m surprised Patterson put his name on this drivel
So, so bad. Flat, undeveloped characters and a stereotypical “sports story” plot were bad enough for a one star review, but the horrible, egregious errors about the horse world were even more glaring. Whoever wrote this nonsense didn’t even know what a 3 Day Event is! Said an English saddle is so very heavy! Seemed to believe that every time a rider comes off, the horse falls down. Total nonsense!!! I only finished it because of Patterson’s name. I thought something would redeem a truly terrible book. But, no.

Bravo!
Loved this story, the authenticity, no sad parts about animals. Spot on and incredibly enjoyable. From one Horsewoman to this one… well done!

Loved this book!
I don’t do much fiction but I was drawn to this book and I got it on audible because I’m always on the go not have time to sit down and read. But I cleaned my house a lot while listening to it walking my dogs a lot while listening to it and driving a lot while listening to it got through in four days loved it!
