About this listen

Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home. Thanks to Martin Sheen’s performance and the voices of ordinary Americans throughout this Audible Original, listeners can feel what life was like during a disruptive and uncertain period of American history. Martha Little is the Executive Producer, and Dan Gediman is the series producer of The Home Front.

Note: The Home Front contains mature and sensitive themes.

Excellent! But incessant breaks with credits along the way.

I loved the audio insights. Keep these things coming!

But very annoying format with the incessant credits. There are 16 episodes. Each one starts with an intro "this is what you're going to hear in this episode" then the episode, then "this is what you are going to hear next," then just under 2 minutes of credits for that episode, then a new episode starts with "this is what you are going to hear."

Seriously, 30 minutes of that, altogether, throughout the program.

I listen at 2X so they kept coming and coming.

Get to the meat and potatoes and cut out the fluff. Put all the credits at the end and be done with it.

I would give it 5 stars if it weren't for the credits which slowed everything down.

Learned some New and very interesting stories.

I especially enjoyed learning about the Port Chicago Bomb. I lived in Port Chicago in the early 60's until the Navy decided to demolish our little town. Martin Sheen is a master narrator, as usual!

Great listen!

Loved this- very informative. I watch a lot about WW2 but nothing focused on what happened in the US. This was eye opening.

Well done.

The journey through history was captivating and exciting. Our history seems to have been stripped from us and hearing the voices of those who lived and experienced this seminal, pivotal time of history was inspiring.
I encourage everyone to listen to the way things were, for it is said ,if we do not learn from history we are doomed to repeat our mistakes.

New perspective of World War II

As someone born a month after World War II ended, this podcast provided an audible account of the war my parents experienced.

Riveting narration, dynamic personal accounts brought the experiences of soldiers, and home front survivors to life.Excellent production.
I highly recommend this listening experience

Caliber of Ken Burns on audible

What made the experience of listening to The Home Front: Life in America During World War II the most enjoyable?

Richness of detail and variety of information formats. Voices of the people in America before, during and after the war (Studs Terkel is an American treasure). Weaving of different formats from great narration by Sheen with voices of Roosevelt, Churchill and so many other decision-makers of the time. Unvarnished details of the home front experience. Just incredible. Huge perspective. Educational +++ and listenable+++ together.

What other book might you compare The Home Front: Life in America During World War II to and why?

Although this presentation was audio only, it was a multi-media experience!! So there is really no book to compare.

What about Martin Sheen’s performance did you like?

Excellent all around.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Don't sit when I listen to books but I listened straight through the two days while doing all my chores.

Incredibly well done, magnificently told!

This performance not only intrigued me right from the beginning, it kept me! I was moved, educated, inspired, saddened and proud throughout the program. I laughed a little, cried more and listened! This program changed my perspective on thing I “thought” I know about our country, the war, the history and our people. I highly recommend this! 10 stars!!

Martin Sheen is such a known and believable host.

WWll was my parents ‘ era. For me it was too distant to relate to. This series made me feel like I was living during those times. I enjoyed experiencing the multiple dimensions of those times and their impact on American life. It was something my husband and I could listen to and enjoy together on long drives.
