About this listen

Thucydides’s The History of the Peloponnesian War is one of the most famous, influential, and moving works of genuine history in our traditions. His brilliant account of the civil war among the Greeks redefined how we should analyze the past, driving a permanent wedge between accounts based on myth and folk traditions and those based on empirical investigation and a rational inquiry into human motives. The work is also a profoundly tragic illumination, not merely of the self-destructive events of the civil war, but also of the future course of human history.

This gave me a new and deeper appreciation for the Greeks. The depth and attention to detail for someone writing thousands of years ago is a reminder of high achievement in ancient times. The military and political history is likewise worthwhile to study in an effort to understand the present day.

What disappointed you about The History of the Peloponnesian War?

Nice voice from Neville Jason, wonderful story told by Thucydides with a brilliant translation... but ENTIRE CHAPTERS are left out! Way to ruin the story. DO NOT BUY this version!
