About this listen

Roses and vines run delicately across her skin, snaking from her chest to the top of her thigh. On any other day the tattoo would look beautiful. But this was her last…

When Detective Maria Miller walks up creaking stairs into the attic of the old brownstone she senses this isn’t an ordinary crime scene. The brutality of the murder is enough to shock even an experienced detective like Maria. But there’s something else. An unsettling presence seems to lurk in the shadows sending a chill through Maria’s bones, making her desperate to run back down the stairs and never return…

The killing is identical to the murder of an actress sixty years before, a crime that tore a family apart and sent shockwaves through New York City. In both cases, a satanic ritual was performed. Body parts were taken from the victims and never found.

Has the killer returned all these years later? Is there a copycat? Maria won’t let fear stop her from finding answers. Even when her relentless pursuit of the truth brings evil to her own door…

Perfect for fans of John Connolly, A. J. Rivers and Cara Hunter, this chilling crime thriller from the bestselling author Helen Phifer will have you sleeping with the lights on.

The “Haunting” was outlandish and not at all scary. British word usage crept in often. (Americans don’t say “whilst,” especially hard-bitten New York cops, and they don’t say they’re stopping at a friend’s house when they mean staying overnight.) Far from being a Page Turner—it was a cure for insomnia.

Boring

I really enjoyed this story. It flipped effortlessly between past and now, the characters were so engaging and the story flowed easily despite covering a myriad of themes ie murder, supernatural, intrigue etc

Fun!!!

Enjoyed the narration, story was good, human aspect was not wrapped up, but paranormal side was.

This wasn’t what I was expecting but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s part crime drama part paranormal horror. The narrator is amazing, giving each character its own voice. Highly recommend.

Two fave genres combined into one

I did not listen to all of the book. It was extremely hard to follow for me anyway. It just was not interesting at all, and I do like the author, but this book was just not it for me.

This one had potential to be pretty good, storyline was ok, going from past to present and back was effortless. What I couldn’t get past and made me give up half way thru was the misuse of American English. We don’t say “stopping” or “whilst” and New Yorkers have a distinct accent that isn’t used by this narrator. Also, as a born and raised US citizen, I was disappointed that this series is based in the US. I like hearing the accents and different ways some words are used in the UK especially. I’ve listened to many other books by this author that were set in the UK and I really liked them.
I should’ve listened to the preview before purchasing! Lesson learned! I don’t know how it ends do I can’t comment on that.

Misuse of American English

The grammar was completely distracting. The narrator mispronounced words. The story was potentially fun, but the characters had no depth, and it was hard to care about any of them.

The awful grammar “He was sat on the steps”.

The whole story was stupid. Maybe teenagers would like. I don’t believe in ghosts and spirits.
