About this listen

How did a New York-born, Jewish, former-atheist novelist and screenwriter - a winner of multiple Edgar Awards, whose books became films with Clint Eastwood and Michael Douglas - find himself at the age of 50 being baptized and confessing Jesus as Lord? That's a tale worth telling.

From his childhood outside New York City through his years as college-dropout wanderer and on to his growing success as a writer, Andrew Klavan consumed stories. From novels and plays to movies and the Bible, literature helped him interpret the world and understand his place in it. Dropping out of college to wander the country as an itinerant journalist, he met the woman who became his wife - and tales of marriage have been central to his writing ever since.

Wrestling with severe depression that took him to the brink of suicide, his readings of Hamlet and even Freud became crucial life-giving supports. And lying in bed reading Patrick O'Brien's seafaring tales, he found the courage to say a prayer - "thank you" - that overturned his life and led, inevitably, to his baptism in New York City a few days after his father's memorial service. The stories of Western literature led Andrew Klavan to Jesus. This is Klavan's story of that journey.

Fascinatingly written and well narrated. Andrew has been transformed and is clearly one of the most literate and insightful commentators of our time.

A truly remarkable personal journey

This is one of the most honest things I’ve ever read. Andrew Klavan’s amazingly unflinching autobiography is a must read. I found this book after seeing his testimony on One For Israel’s YouTube Channel. His story is beyond inspiring because of what he had to overcome to become happy, but also due to the pointers he provides to the literary classics, the Bible and prayer, to name a few. Most of all, it is his absolute commitment to truth that inspired me to be more rigorous in my own spiritual journey. The Audible version is especially excellent because in his own telling you are able to journey together through his the events that shaped him.

Inspirational and Life Changing

I relate immensely with Andrew and his story. I am not the intellectual that he is, but most of my life has been in some state of existential crisis and deeply appreciate his rational and logical approach to faith. I have been a believer since I was a kid but this book has rekindled my own faith. I too have struggled with depression and darkness and this book has been a light of hope shining through the fog. Thank you Andrew for letting God work in you and for sharing your testimony. Your story has been a ministry to me. God Bless.

Christianity as a Fact of the Human Condition

I have been listening to the Andrew Klavan show for over a year now and heard him reference this book a few times. When my wife said she wanted to listen to it together, I had no idea what I was signing up for. His depiction of depression was like going back in time to my own. The love he feels for his wife were the words I never dare to speak to my own. His inability to stray from the truth, even to his own detriment, were like listening to myself going through life. His final conclusion of the fact of Christianity is something I have believed all my life, though his proof was far beyond my understanding. While not everyone will share commonalities with his story, (at least I sincerely hope so for their sake) it is still worth a read or listen as a way to challenge one's own understand of what it is to be human, what it is to live in a world with others, what it is to love, and what it is to have faith. This is a work that needs to be shared so that its message can help share the love of Christ through this existence we know as reality.
