About this listen

If you have never ridden a mule along a 48-inch wide trail whose ledge drops off, in places, 700 feet to the Colorado River, straight down, you may have difficulty picturing the temporary insanity that leads otherwise responsible adults to sign away the remainder of their natural life expectancy just for the chance to see the Grand Canyon's natural beauty close-up.

Listening to Donald Davis, you won't have any trouble visualizing it: the gleeful anticipation, the encounter with the psyche of "your own, personal mule", and the first-hand experience of a natural wonder. Davis interweaves his humor around vivid details of perhaps the most remarkable experience offered by an American national park.

Editorial reviews

With his rich Southern accent, storyteller Donald Davis takes listeners traveling to the Grand Canyon and to the Appalachians. When Davis first encountered the income tax as a boy, his father suggested he read the federal budget until he found where he wanted his money to go. Davis decreed his personal ownership of the national parks. Half of this audio tells of his first visit, recently, to the Grand Canyon. After a harrowing, hilarious journey on muleback, told with deadpan earnestness, Davis is ready to give his share of that park away. The following tales of childhood visits to his grandparents' log cabin in Appalachia have classic "scary story" features and warm family resolutions.

Critic reviews

"Donald Davis is one of the nation's most popular storytellers. A master of timing, Davis measures some sentences drop by drop, pouring others out like water from a pitcher." (Smithsonian Magazine)

Story great as the Canyon is Grand!

What made the experience of listening to The Grand Canyon the most enjoyable?

Knowing the Grand Canyon well since I was a river guide for years made this story even more interesting and funny for me. Knowing people who get dizzy with fear of heights also makes me understand his point of view. Absolutely entertaining. We all pay taxes and get into situations that we underestimate. Entertaining even if you missed part of the story. Well thought out and woven with intricate contrasts of laughing and cringing in anticipation.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the thought provoking ending of this hilarious tale.

What about Donald Davis’s performance did you like?

I love his accent, being from the west myself. His accent seems to lend itself to story telling.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I almost peed my pants laughing the first time I heard this story. I still laugh every time I listen to the story. I am able to identify with the story on many levels.

Any additional comments?

It is great. Perfect gift for friends or enemies who you want to make your friends!

Misleading

Although Donald Davis does an excelent job in describing his ride on a mule, the title of this audiobook, is misleading. Only half of the book is about the ride. The rest of the book is about Davis's childhood experiences, none of which are related to the Grand Canyon. I was expecting the entire book to be about the Grand Canyon, because of the title. That isn't what I got. Therefore, I was disappointed.
