New chapters on the brain, intersectionality, and parents. Simple, proven strategies that schools can start using today. With a view through an economic lens that has only become sharper and more focused since its initial publication in 1995, the premise owned by A Framework for Understanding Poverty is unchanged: Middle-class understandings of children and adults in poverty are often ill-suited for connecting with people in poverty and helping them build up the resources to rise out of poverty and into self-sufficiency.

In the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They jam-pack their schedules with AP classes, fill every waking hour with resume-padding activities, and even sabotage relationships with friends to “get ahead.” Family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools.

Story
Education can be transformed if we eradicate our fixation on big data like standardized test scores as the supreme measure of equity and learning. Instead of the focus being on “fixing” and “filling” academic gaps, we must envision and rebuild the system from the student up—with classrooms, schools and systems built around students’ brilliance, cultural wealth, and intellectual potential. Street data reminds us that what is measurable is not the same as what is valuable and that data can be humanizing, liberatory and healing.

From kindergarten to college, American boys are, on average, less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere 20 years ago. The gender gap in college attendance and graduation rates has widened dramatically. In Boys Adrift, Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on more than 20 years of clinical experience to explain why boys and young men are failing in school and disengaged at home.

Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how close we come to it or how far we deviate from it. The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don't even question it. That assumption, says Harvard's Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.

Story
Technology is awesome. Teachers are better. Blending new technologies into instruction is a non-negotiable if we are to help our students gain the skills they'll need to thrive in careers. And so too is educators' old school wisdom in planning intentional blended learning that works. Too often, sincere enthusiasm for technologies pushes proven instructional strategies to the wayside, all but guaranteeing blended learning that is all show and no go. Bold School is an audiobook that restores teachers to their rightful place in effective instruction.

Story
The story we usually tell about childhood and success is the one about intelligence: success comes to those who score highest on tests, from preschool admissions to SATs. But in How Children Succeed, Paul Tough argues that the qualities that matter most have more to do with character: skills like perseverance, curiosity, conscientiousness, optimism, and self-control. How Children Succeed introduces us to a new generation of researchers and educators who, for the first time, are using the tools of science to peel back the mysteries of character.

made obsolete by 'MostLikelyToSucceed'-still great
if you can read all three.
read this book first
then Creating Innovators
and then Most Likely to Succeed
if you plan on reading only one or two. then "Most likely to Succeed" is the best choice. and creating innovators should come next.
that is not to knock this work. this book contains years of research and expertise and brilliant solutions to our educational impasse
making school spiritually fulfilling and academically rewarding is not only possible and desirable but absolutely necessary for the 21st century
a 21st century world needs to raise children who will be crtical thinkers, expert communicators, skilled collaborators, and innovative creators
we cannot rely on a 20th education for 21st century succees
anyone who wants to change the world for the better must read tony wagner. his ideas are absolutely vital.

Better for Parents than Educators
As an educator, I found this book to be old news. If you are a parent, it might help to explain why the Common Core was founded and why education needs to change in order for your child to be productive in the future. I think it does a good job of explaining why the changes are needed and I think everyone who is against the Common Core really should read it.

Outstanding work
The book touches the jugular vein of the educational system based on American standards. However, solutions are urgent, and without partisanship. Best book since Joe L. Kincheloe's books.

Very Thought Provoking
As a long time educator and current educational leader I found this book to be very thought provoking. Not only does Tony Wagner outline what is wrong about our schools today, but he also gives solutions and points to real world examples of schools making change and being successful. I think this book is a must read for any educational leaders. I only hope that I can start conversations in my own district to help close the global achievement gap .

Great content- poorly read on audible.
This is a great book and every parent, teacher, and administrator should read it. I must admit though I was distracted by the narrator. The voice is unbearably monotone. I legitimately think they have a robot who read this. Otherwise great book and rich content.

Why Can't Our Best Schools Train a Fluent Narrator
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I have tried to listen to this book because the topic, research and assertions really interest me. However, the robotic narration makes it very difficult to tolerate.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Costanzo?
L.J. Ganser, who narrated Class Warfare did a much better job.

Who hired this guy that is narrating this?
The narrator is horrible. As a person that uses audio books as an accommodation to access these books as quickly as others. But this audio book narration is the worst! It sounds like a robot is reading it. Pauses in weird spots and emphasis in weird parts as well.
