About this listen
An irreverent, sexy, and hysterical romp through the tarot…
KATE:
You know that quote about most people living quiet lives of desperation? Well, that pretty much describes me to a T.
I’m middle-aged, divorced, built like a tree stump, with nothing but a failing romance-writing career to call my own. Yep, no kids, no social life and no pets—not even a chinchilla to greet when I walk through the door of my crappy apartment.
The only thing I do have? Spare Tire Sandy who lives around my waist. Oh, and a nicotine habit I’m desperately trying to kick.
When my eccentric Aunt Artemis ups and dies, leaving me her ‘castle’ in Vermont, I start thinking maybe my luck is taking a turn for the better.
Yeah, no.
The property, in the tiny town of Maplewood, is literally a castle but not like something you’d see in Scotland. This is more like Medieval England had a battle with The Tarot and neither won.
Which means it’s going to be a bitch and a half to sell.
To make matters worse? There’s a tenant in ‘Tarot Castle’ and not like the squatter sort—more like the talking goat sort. Right—Rocco sounds like a New York mobster which is grating enough, but throw in the fact that I’m now responsible for him and I’m not a happy camper.
And let’s not even discuss the shrunken head, Yolanda, who literally WILL NOT STOP TALKING!
The only person who can help me make sense of my new inheritance is Luke Montgomery, owner of the coffee/ bookstore in town. Luke is friendly, really hot in a J. Crew sort of way, and also annoyingly hush-hush about the legacy I’ve apparently been born into: some BS about being a Daughter of the Moon.
And then there’s Magnus Stormrider, my self-proclaimed guardian, who looks like the love-child of Conan the Barbarian and Fabio. The best way to describe Magnus? If the ground opened up and swallowed him whole, I wouldn’t mind—not for one second.
According to my aunt’s never-ending posthumous letters that keep appearing from literally nowhere, I’m supposedly on the journey of The Fool, the first card of the Major Arcana of the tarot.
And that’s pretty damned fitting because if there’s one thing I’m sure of—it’s that I was the biggest fool to have ever agreed to come out here in the first place…

Beckett: If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have. I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride. My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart.

Ryder, Garrett, Kenzo, and Diesel - The Vipers. Their deals are as sordid as their business, and their reputation is enough to bring a grown man to his knees, forcing him to beg for mercy. They are not people you mess with, yet my dad did. The old man ran up a debt with them and then sold me to cover his losses. Yes, sold me. They own me now. I’m theirs in every sense of the word. But I’ve never been meek and compliant.

AI narration
Disliked the AI narration. Too blah and a good narrator is out of a job as well.

Story good, Alexa ok
The story was good and I enjoyed it. Alexa is a good reader, but not worth the full credit. it's OK as part of the plus catalog.

Disappointed
I didn’t finish this book. I tend not to review books if I didn’t read them completely, but the point at which I stopped, I think is important. This is now the second paranormal book I’ve read that starts off with a promising, feisty middle aged character and then by some majestic, celestial power this “I’ve paid my dues/been through the wars” woman gets transformed into what is understood, stereotypically, as a “desired body;” either made younger or in this case more voluptuous. This is now tiresome and disrespectful. It feels like a bit of a bait and switch for the readers who would have been attracted to the novel based on the blurb’s pre-transformation description of the protagonist. So, it’s simple, I am no longer giving an author the benefit of the doubt- you change a middle-aged woman into any kind of girlish embodiment and I change my reading selection. I think that’s a fair exchange.

The story is funny but the voice blagh
I couldn't stop laughing. But the voice took the humour away. But the book is so funny but then the voice you can save yourself money or credit and just use kindle voice at least you can use different voice. It would be greAt with the perfect reader.Or dramatized version.

What’s the deal with the Virtual Voice?!
This would be a great book if it had the right reader. I listened to it because I love H. P. Mallory. The reader actually sounds like a virtual reader. If this continues, I won’t be investing in any more of her audiobooks.

Nothing happened
I have read a bunch of this authors work and normally I enjoy it. But this story is exceptionally slow. Just a bunch of waffling on a decision and repetitive dialog. This book could have been 4, maybe 5, chapters tops. However, the characters are fun. I have hope for book two. The Ai voice was fine. The inflection on some slang words was hilarious wrong. But not awful for a generated voice.

AI voice
I couldn't finish listening. The 'virtual voice' was unnerving. The uneven modulation. monotone, and sometimes out of place inflections through me off.
I much prefer my readings by real people.

Not a fan of the narration.
I found the computer narration to be a let down. Some of the characters are written with dialects and the computerized voice just mangled the dialects. Honestly, this sort of killed it for me.

Honest ☆s Would Be Helpful
I dislike all AI I have heard so far and this is one of the worse.
I don't understand how one could leave a negative review with 3 or 4 stars! I went and read how this book got over 3 stars and the issue seems to be high stars with a negative written review. I gave it the number I feel represents how good/bad it is. Authors PLEASE quit trying to save money with AI. If I like books I will buy others you write but won't take another chance with AI.
