About this listen

Maxy Awards "Book of the Year" and USA Today Bestseller

The international bestselling novel about Murray McBride, a lonely 100-year-old man who's outlived just about everyone he's ever loved. But when he meets a boy awaiting a heart transplant, Murray may learn something about finding meaning in life again . . .

With all his family and friends gone except an estranged grandson, retired Major League ballplayer Murray McBride is looking for a reason to live. He finds it in Jason Cashman, a spirited 10-year-old boy with a terminal heart defect and a list of five things he wants to do before he dies. Murray is determined to help Jason fulfill his dreams. Together, they race against the limited time each has left, ticking off Jason's wishes one by one. Along the way, Murray remembers what it's like to be young, and Jason fights for the opportunity to grow old. But when tragedy strikes, their worlds are turned upside-down, and an unexpected gift is the only thing that can make Jason's final wish come true.

100-year-old Murray McBride finds new meaning in life, and starts a positive butterfly effect on the lives of those around him, in this series about coming of age, friendship, purpose. This heartwarming coming-of-old-age novel is perfect for fans of Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove and Mike Gayle's All the Lonely People.

Great story, bad narration

This is a heartwarming story but I almost stopped listening because I couldn’t handle the narrator. I’m glad that I held out until the end but probably would have enjoyed it more had I read it and not listened.

Loved

This was not a book I would usually read/listen to. I do both. Although it was somewhat predictable it really wasn’t if that makes sense. I loved how Joe did such a nice job with age difference and knowledge for each age group. It has all kinds of wonderful
life stories. You won’t be sorry if you read this.

Sappy, but hooked me from the get go

I love the way this story proves what I strongly believe in. Feeling purposeful brings happiness, especially when your purpose involves making a difference for others. I loved the characters.
The narrator mispronounced several words and names (Javier was Americanized and badly butchered) and his intonation was often way off, to the point of distraction. The redeeming quality was his voice, fortunately.
Overall, I wish I had purchased the actual book.

Wonderful book

Almost stopped listening due to the narrators voice. I’m glad I didn’t. I laughed, cried and didn’t want the book to end! So glad there was a sequel! Highly recommend this book!

Review

I loved the narrator. People don’t understand 100 year-old, retired pro ball player nuance. Just an old guy telling his story, his way; not perfect, but his way. A sweet straight forward, tender tale with an amusing undertone.

Forever friends

I would recommend this book to anyone older than 67, who has been a grandchild and perhaps a grandparent, felt regret from time to time and now is looking at mortality is a different light. Then I would recommend it to anyone who has been a friend, had a friend and misses a friend.

I would then include anyone who wonders about life and its meaning, has felt joy and despair; love and abandonment; guilt and redemption. Then I would include anyone who has a soul that seeks understanding and compassion to read this book and reflect on its message. The best time to listen/read this book is now.

I am forever touched by its tender story of friendship.

What a beautiful story!

I loved this book about a 100 year old man and a 10 year old boy. So real, so touching, both funny and sad. It warmed my heart!❤️

pleasant

A very pleasant book. No sharp edges. A relatively sad tale, told with humor and with a satisfying conclusion .
