About this listen

She can run, but she can never escape her past.

Sophie was abandoned at birth and grew up neglected and abused. Her only friends were computers, until she met Cole Hunter. He became her everything: brother, protector, and partner in crime.

She believed that nothing could ever tear them apart. Until it did.

Years later, when news of Cole's murder reaches Sophie, she completely snaps. She will tear down heaven and earth to find his killer, even enlisting the help of her ex-military ex-boyfriend.

But the more she gets involved with the investigation, the more she puts herself at risk.

When Cole was nine years old, he watched his whole family burn to death in a house fire. He became obsessed with architecture and rebuilding his life.

Sophie became his secret weapon. Protecting her was his purpose. But Sophie was damaged right from the start, and Cole always feared he wouldn't be able to save her from her enemies or from herself.

Too long to get to the point

The storyline was lame. I didn't care for the narrators voice and I kept falling asleep. It just couldn't keep my interest.

Really?

The end was terrible. There were too many story lines left hanging. She is told her parents have been found and she has a brother. Not another word about that... story over. Her “boyfriend” is just left back at the hotel. Someone is killed, maybe by the professor’s daughter. No denouements on any of the side stories. Aaargh.

Another great book

This story is so compelling you just get swept away. Traditionally I leave no spoilers in reviews for books so see for yourself. It's a great buy.

Another Great Story By This Author

Would you listen to The Fireproof Girl again? Why?

Absolutely. It's a very exciting story and is read very well by the narrators.

What other book might you compare The Fireproof Girl to and why?

The quality and mood are comparable to other books by this author, like Clarity or End of Eternity, though the the plot isn't very similar/regurgitated.

What does Kristyn Mass and Andrew B. Wehrlen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There's a lot of depth and emotional nuance you can't get from plain text, things like inflection and such.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was, though I had to break it up because life.

Any additional comments?

This story is a deep character study, twisty and cerebral as it deals with the lasting effects of psychological trauma-- a topic that many of Loretta's books explore. The heroine is struggling to get through each day as the past constantly threatens to drown her, and she fights to unravel the mystery of who killed her brother. Sophie is a bit cold and distant due to her history, but it is easy to understand and like her.

I found the pacing a lot slower and heavier than most of Loretta's other books, and I had to take a break to emotionally process things a few times. The ending genuinely surprised me, and I am eager to get my hands on the next book.
