About this listen

Will Henry and Dr. Warthrop have encountered many horrors together, but can Will endure a monstrumological terror without his mentor?

Will Henry has been through more than seems possible for a boy of fourteen. He's been on the brink of death on more than one occasion, he has gazed into hell and hell has stared back at him, and known his face. But through it all, Dr. Warthrop has been at his side.

When Dr. Warthrop fears that Will's loyalties may be shifting, he turns on Will with a fury, determined to reclaim his young apprentice's devotion. And so Will must face one of the most horrific creatures of his monstrumology career and he must face it alone.

Over the course of one day, Will's life and Pellinor Warthrop's destiny will lie in balance. In the terrifying depths of the Monstrumarium, they will face a monster more terrible than any they could have imagined and their fates will be decided.

We are all Monstrumologists

Love is dangerous for a monstrumologist. Love binds and it kills. Everything you think you know is wrong.
A powerful last book. It lingers in the mind.

Not the ending you think....

It seemed a very sad finish to a life of struggling to get what they each had to give and each needed.

Leaves you wishing

For a lot of things, a more stable storyline, an explanation of who will Henry actually was/is, that the characters would have stayed true to their prior selves from previous books. I revisited and finally finished the series after almost 8 years, and it felt rather lackluster, not that it will ever stop me from reading any of the authors other titles because my god the writing is phenomenal, but I’m left mildly disappointed and more than a little confused.

Excellently written, impressively narrated

One of the finest audio exhibits that I've had the immense pleasure of experiencing. The splendidly imagined setting and atmosphere are woven to life wonderfully by the narrator's voice acting and intononation. Snap to, reader!

A tragic ending to a series that tragically ended too soon

Not a happy ending. The puzzle pieces were all there in the first three books, so it actually is a fitting conclusion, and it does tie the series together, building on the previous narratives in ways they failed at times to connect with each other. But wow does it take a dark turn in an already dark serial. It is no accident that the author references Dante's Inferno and the book of Job so frequently: Like those works, the horror here evokes a personal reaction in the reader that is probably more the point than the story itself. Personally I found myself hoping for some final bit of redemption, but was left with a tragic ending to a series that tragically ended far too soon. Whether the tragedy is truly deserving for these characters and their relationships is left to each reader, but the fact that the ending is divisive among reviewers proves the effectiveness of the story-telling, IMHO.
