Publisher's summary

The year is 1771. Claire Randall is still an outlander, out of place and out of time. But now she is linked by love to her only anchor - Jamie Fraser. They have crossed oceans and centuries to build a life together in North Carolina. But tensions, both ancient and recent, threaten members of their clan.

Knowing that his wife has the gift of prophecy, James must believe Claire, though he would prefer not to. Claire has shared a dreadful truth - there will, without a doubt, be a war. Her knowledge of the oncoming revolution is a flickering torch that may light his way through perilous years ahead - or ignite a conflagration that will leave their lives in ashes.

Finally! Worth the wait

I started with Outlander several years ago, rejoiced with the availability of Drums of Autumn and Dragonfly in Amber. I sadly stalled when Fiery Cross was unavailable. I tried to listen to CDs borrowed from the library, but gave it up when changing CDs became tedious. When I was forced to actually read the books, Gabaldon's story IS compelling, I heard Davina Porter's voice in my head. Thank you so much for bringing this and A Breath of Snow and Ashes into the Audible fold. I look forward to many happy hours of listening. Starting the series over again is no trouble at all. In fact it is one of the very few series I've wanted to re-listen to. Thanks.

So much history

I can only thank Diana and Davina for the wonderful time I have enjoyed listening to these brilliant series of books. I am going to find it hard to source out anything close to the outlander series. It has spoilt me for storyline and narrator. Thank You

I Just Love Gabaldon and Porter!

Diana Gabaldon is a gifted storyteller and Davina Porter may be one of the best readers that I have ever heard. This is the 5th book in a great series. If you enjoy any type of historical fiction it is a series that you must begin.

Entrancing

The story is rich with interesting ins and outs of the family those who interact with them, culture of the time and history. It's one of my favorites of this series.

Less "high adventure"...more "day in the life"

Diana Gabaldon is an extraordinary writer; Davina Porter an amazing narrator. But none of Galadon's subsequent books can compare to Outlander. Outlander was so full of adventure, suspense, and energy. Fiery Cross reminds me of a reality TV show, where someone just puts up a bunch of cameras in someone's house and you watch them live their lives. Gabaldon's power of description...her knowledge of every minute detail of life in historical times, her knowledge of shipping, farming, medicine, plants, etc, is endless, and amazing. But it feels less like listening to a story with a beginning, middle, and end, and more like eavesdropping into someone's lives. I actually began to feel like these were real people, and I was somehow invading their privacy. But I never felt like the story ever got off the ground. I would fall asleep listening to it at night and not bother rewinding to see what I'd missed. I keep buying more books in the series, hoping to recapture the magic of Outlander, but so far it has not happened. Still, if you've the time, and if you just want to spend a bit more time with Jamie and Claire, it's a nice read.

Another Great Outlander Book

Beautifully written such that you feel as if you have been transported directly into the story. The narration is superb as well.
