Acerca de esta escucha

From a number one New York Times best-selling author: A "magnificent" epic based on the early life of Genghis Khan (New York Herald Tribune).

This sweeping saga captures life in the Far East during the Middle Ages and dramatizes the events that transformed a Mongol tribesman named Temujin into the man who would conquer Asia and be known to the world for centuries to come as Genghis Khan.

Raised by an indomitable woman and educated by his outcast uncle, Temujin becomes a fearsome warrior who inspires loyalty in his friends and hatred in his enemies. But he is also blessed with a keen intelligence and the charisma of a natural born leader. In an era marked by treachery and savage violence, these gifts lead Temujin to a relentless pursuit of power.

From the Gobi Desert to Samarkand, Taylor Caldwell transports readers to a distant world and shines a brilliant light on one of history's most enigmatic figures. On her "huge historical canvas...blood spurts from the knife; beads of sweat stand out on straining flesh; lusts are consummated and revenges achieved" (New York Herald Tribune).

I am a Taylor Caldwell fan. I enjoyed this lengthy listen. It might be considered slow by today's swashbuckling adventure movie speed, but the pictures she paints of the Gobi desert are simply spectacular. You just know she went there and experienced it because the descriptions of sunsets, and mirages and night skies are just amazing. The characters are well drawn. The narration is solid. Think English Patient. It might flow too slowly for some, but I thoroughly enjoyed the languid journey.

Caldwell is a master at character and situational development. I have read several of her books and expect to read more. I could have hoped for a more suited voice to narrate a story about Genghis Khan.

Character development.

This is, allegedly, about genghis khan. My very first question is, why is ever character speaking old english? I mean it's truly bizzare to hear "the and thou" form a Mongolian for this time period.

The beginning is dull and boring and introduces characters I dislike and don't care much about.

A slog-fest
