About this listen

Living legend and lifelong activist Billie Jean King talks about what it takes to stand up and fight for equality, regardless of the circumstances. Fifty years ago, King and eight other female tennis players, known as the Original Nine, bravely put their careers and reputations on the line to fight for equal pay and equal footing for women’s tennis, with the indispensable help of promoter Gladys Heldman, the founder and publisher of World Tennis magazine, and the groundbreaking sponsorship of Joseph Cullman III, the CEO of the Philip Morris Company. When the Original Nine signed symbolic one-dollar contracts to stage their first breakaway tournament in Houston, ignoring threats from the existing tennis establishment, it was the start of the pro tennis tour for women as we know it and paved the way for modern stars to earn tens of millions in career prize money today.

Inclusion and inspiration

Ms King is a force! I enjoyed hearing her no-nonsense view of our world. Relationships and hard work will keep us moving forward. Really loved hearing this in her own voice.

So full of positivity and inspiration!

I thoroughly enjoyed all of Billie Jean King‘s messages and advice in this audiobook. She herself has achieved so much and yet she emphasizes the importance of teamwork and relationships with others to her accomplishments. And the soundtrack with Sarah Bareilles’ music was awesome!

Women’s rights are human rights!

It’s an inspiring story that is so relevant to today’s human rights moment we are in. It shows that one person can make a difference and drive change towards equality. It’s told in a casual way where you feel Billie Jean is just having a regular conversation with you. It’s easy to follow and shares an insiders view to the biggest victories in women’s professional sports.

If you need some inspo

Wow, it really hit me. This really helped me in my journey to find my passion. And I think it will for you too. This was a little too short, but overall great title. Would have love just a little bit more aspects of the how in this, but I still loved it. If you only have an hour to listen, I would highly recommend this.

Excellent story, reads a little dry

This story is definitely worth hearing but it reads a little slow. My recommendation: listen at 1.5 speed. Fast enough to understand the words but slow enough so that Billie Jean King doesn’t sound like a chipmunk. Highly recommend!

Equity

It was a pleasure to hear Billie Jean King tell her story about the landscape of girl’s sports in 1950s and the shamateur “women’s” tennis scene of the 1960 and 1970s. I especially appreciated learning about her personal drive towards equality in her sport starting in 1956 and the way that she grew this longing to include all people in all ways. I’ve always thought BJK was interesting. I’m not specifically a tennis fan, but after hearing her story I can say with certainty that I’m a Billie Jean King fan! This was a great read.

Billie Jean King - she explains her role in forging equality for women in athletics.

Billie Jean King gives an excellent account of her struggles and of her accomplishments in the world of athletics. The women’s movement in America owes her big time. I was very impressed by her delivery and her thoroughness. Every woman in America should listen to her story.

WOW

I had no idea about this amazing story! Billie Jean King is wonderful and an absolute joy to listen to ❣️ This is a history that should be told far and wide... hmm... since it’s women’s history we must take extra effort to distribute it, but sooo worth the listen! Thank you Billie Jean for taking the time to document this 😊
