About this listen
Kevin Kling, best known for his commentaries on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and his storytelling stage shows like Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log, delivers hilarious, often tender stories to listeners everywhere with his first book, The Dog Says How.
Kling's autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life: hopping freight trains, getting hit by lightning, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia, growing up in Minnesota, and eating things before knowing what they are.
In the comical yet poignant title story, Kling straddles the world of the ordinary and one rivaling Dante's inferno as he learns how to use voice-recognition software after a life-threatening motorcycle accident.

Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Six-time Emmy Award-winning funnyman Tim Conway, best known for his characters on The Carol Burnett Show, offers a straight-shooting and hilarious memoir about his life on stage and off as an actor and comedian. In television history, few entertainers have captured as many hearts and made as many people laugh as Tim Conway. Ever since he was small, John Robison had longed to connect with other people, but by the time he was a teenager, his odd habits, an inclination to blurt out non sequiturs, avoid eye contact, dismantle radios, and dig five-foot holes, had earned him the label "social deviant". No guidance came from his mother or his father. It was no wonder he gravitated to machines, which could, at least, be counted on.

In her delightful and moving memoir, Sissy Spacek writes about her idyllic, barefoot childhood in a small East Texas town, with the clarity and wisdom that comes from never losing sight of her roots. He had just graduated from Middlebury College and was ready to begin his adult life, but he didn't know how. So he decided to take a cross-country quest for guidance, one where everyone he met would be his guide. In the year that followed, he faced an Appalachian winter and a Mojave summer. He met beasts inside: fear, loneliness, doubt.

Story
Blue Collar Comedy star Bill Engvall is just a guy. He's been one his whole life. He can't help it; he was born that way. And that makes him an expert on the subject. For the record, here's the official definition of a guy: a person who doesn't think before he speaks. He can't. He's not that deep. Because a guy has only three basic needs: eating, sleeping, and sex. That's it. Just a Guy chronicles a lifetime in pursuit of those needs.

Story
What do the lives of Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and other historical figures have in common with Paula Poundstone? In the hands of this wryly observant and self-deprecating comedian, the answer is outrageously funny and unexpectedly touching. Poundstone compares her crazy life to theirs, as she holds forth on her children, her career, and the time in her life when it appeared she would lose them both.

Story
A lyrical and authentic book that recounts the story of a border-town family in Brownsville, Texas in the 1980s, as each member of the family desperately tries to assimilate and escape life on the border to become "real" Americans, even at the expense of their shared family history. This is really un-mined territory in the memoir genre that gives in-depth insight into a previously unexplored corner of America.

Though Jack Kerouac began thinking about the novel that was to become On the Road as early as 1947, it was not until three weeks in April 1951, in an apartment on West 20th Street in Manhattan, that he wrote the first full draft that was satisfactory to him.

True storyteller
Kevin Kling is a renown storyteller and play write. His NPR contributions are stellar. This book is no different. His enthusiasm is catching. No there’s no “plot”, not that kind of book. Just wonderful stories of his childhood and life experiences. That’s what story telling is. A wonderful listen

Funny, poignant, FANTASTIC reading by author
Laugh-out-loud funny stories with just the right touch of poignancy to keep them from being saccharine. The author is from Minnesota and tells stories grounded in his childhood, so the inevitable comparison to Garrison Keillor comes to mind. But since Kling is from a much different generation than Keillor--my generation, in fact--the stories feel very different and more relatable. Spaghettios and grilled cheese sandwiches, skating in winter with hand-me-down skates, eating Jello at every meal, all these tidbits of everyday life took me right back to my own Wisconsin childhood.
I HIGHLY recommend the audio version of this book. Listening to the author read this in his Minnesota accent adds immeasurably to the stories, and since he is an actor, he is well able to perform the work.
One of the best books I have read so far this year.

Excellent Storytelling
Kevin Kling is an excellent storyteller. I knew who he was and was familiar with some of his works, but hadn’t heard him speak live until he came to our local library last winter. He was so entertaining, funny and honest. He narrates his book filled with personal essays and reflections on life. A wonderful, uplifting listen.

Kevin is treasure chest
Kevin is a treasure chest full of stories, his own and other peoples’. His voice makes him sound like a goofball, but I’m from GA, so what do I know about Minnesota. I laughed so hard that I cried and cried for the sincere honesty that flowed from his brain to his mouth by way of his heart. I’ve always liked Kevin Kling from his NPR bits and now I love him like the brother I never had.

Not for moms with kid dead in motorcycle accident
so if your son died at 17 in a motorcycle accident, you might not get past the first 20 minutes. The narrator wasn't good either. so no clue how the story developed. They should have warnings: Motorcycle accident: brain and body damage central to story. Or Rape victims may find plot distressing. Or Caution! Gruesome Home Invasion detailed. Beware! Explicit Torture scenes. You get the picture.
