Something dark and evil has awakened....

Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City - and she is pos-i-tute-ly ecstatic. It's 1926, and New York is filled with speakeasies, Ziegfeld girls, and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is that she has to live with her uncle Will and his unhealthy obsession with the occult.

Evie worries her uncle will discover her darkest secret: a supernatural power that has only brought her trouble so far. But when the police find a murdered girl branded with a cryptic symbol and Will is called to the scene, Evie realizes her gift could help catch a serial killer.

As Evie jumps headlong into a dance with a murderer, other stories unfold in the city that never sleeps. A young man named Memphis is caught between two worlds. A chorus girl named Theta is running from her past. A student named Jericho is hiding a shocking secret. And unknown to all, something dark and evil has awakened....

Delightful!

This was a great listen! The narrator truly made the story come alive with spot on character and atmosphere representation. January LaVoy made every character an individual, and I felt like I was in the 1920's experiencing everything with them. The story was a refreshing plot line in YA literature and set up for the upcoming books nicely. I have listened to more than a hundred audiobooks at this point, and this one is easily one of favorites. "Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry"

Magical story

This is the best book in the series hands down. I loved getting to know all the characters and being introduced to the world they live in. January LaVoy really brings these characters to life. I love that everyone had a distinct voice, and she really made the story come to life.

I'd had already read this story when it as first released, but I'm so glad I came back to try the audio because it was so worth it. I'm diving into book 2 right now!

Incredible Listen.

What did you love best about The Diviners?

This was a great book! I am starting the second one tomorrow. Very exciting but mostly I believe because of January LaVoy. She really brought the already well-written book to life. I listened to it over 3 days while I built some bookcases for a friend and completely forgot about the project I was working on. Next thing I know the project is done and all I cared about was what is going to have to Evie.

What other book might you compare The Diviners to and why?

I don't normally listen to fiction but this has changed my mind. I plan to listen/read at least one fiction book per week now.

What about January LaVoy’s performance did you like?

She is now my favorite narrator. I will only listen to books she narrates because she brings the book to life with all of the voices and singing. Truly incredible. Listening to her is better than going to a movie.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to listen to it all in one sitting but it is like 19 hours long.

Amazing narration, amazing story

What does January LaVoy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voices are absolutely amazing. For the male characters, I often forget that she's a woman doing a male voice and completely believe that I am listening to a man talk. Her narration voice is also very soothing to listen to and her singing the songs add a rich layer to the book. She made listening to this book beyond amazing. Reading the second book wasn't as wonderful of an experience as listening to the first book because I wasn't able to hear the voices. Hands down, January LaVoy is the best narrator I have ever listened to.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was extremely terrified during this book--more so than when I was listening to It by Stephen King. I think it was largely due to how amazing of a narrator January LaVoy is because her voices really immersed me in the story. I could totally imagine the bad guy in the book coming out to get me.

love spookys and 20s history? read this

I already knew a bit of trivia about the 1920s art and culture so coming into this book with that background knowledge I was delighted to listen. this book looks at the era of the roaring twenties with a lens that understands that with all the glitz and glam came atrocities committed against people who were not white straight ablebodied men. The author strikes a great balance between the hopeful ideals of a nation at the daennof a new era and the harsh reality of how it got there on the backs of people deemed "lesser". not to mention the exciting mystery and great interpersonal relationships that kept me thinking about every characters own story in the narrative. the voice work deserves it's own review entirely ms January said "oh I can just do every 20s accent I want huh" and ran. lots of great transatlantic gibberish that's just fun to listen to. I'll definitely be catching the next books in the Diviners series

amazing narrator

i rarely write reviews, but the narrator for this book was awesome! she had such a distinct voice for each character that i could identify who was speaking before she even told me directly. she really captured the eerie chants and intensity of the book as a whole! i’m going to purchase the second book in the series immediately!

Enjoyed Every Moment

I never felt like it was dragging on or drawing anything out. I loved every moment of this book. I read along with January LaVoy, and thoroughly enjoyed her voice acting capabilities, I highly recommend this for a good mystery with some very interesting supernatural elements.
