About this listen
Preacher's son Moses Bailey believed that the fiddle was the voice of the Devil and denied his wife the pleasure of the music she dearly loved. She fiddled for her three children behind her husband's back. Thus begins a magnificent 150-year saga of a musical Southern family featuring barn dances, medicine shows, the Grand Ole Opry, and the evolution of country music from hymns to rockabilly.
Generations of authentic, down-home mountain people spring to life, colorful dialects and all, through the magic of several extraordinary narrators. Each chapter, a story in itself, will move listeners with its passion, emotion, warmth, and intimacy.

Aging Herb’s charmed life with his dear wife, Susan, in their Key West house is coming undone. Susan now needs constant care, and Herb is in denial about his own ailing health. The one bright spot is the arrival of an endlessly optimistic manicurist calling herself Renee. She sings to Susan during manicures, gets her to paint, and brings her a sense of contentment. But then Herb and Susan’s adult children arrive to stage an intervention on their stubborn, independent father, and as a consequence, Renee’s gig with Susan—and her grand plans for her own life—start to unravel as well.

Story
Folksy and fresh, endearing and affecting, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is the now-classic novel of two women in the 1980s; of gray-headed Mrs. Threadgoode telling her life story to Evelyn, who is in the sad slump of middle age. The tale she tells is also of two women - of the irrepressibly daredevilish tomboy Idgie and her friend Rut - -who back in the thirties ran a little place in Whistle Stop, Alabama, a Southern kind of Cafe Wobegon offering good barbecue and good coffee and all kinds of love and laughter, even an occasional murder.

The Stantons and the Nortons were families in the truest, oldest sense: extended networks of kin stretching across the mountains, everyone within hiking distance. They’d come from the British Isles and settled in the Appalachians of North Carolina during the 1700s, bringing with them their dearly loved songs and their clannish ways, their ties to the land ultimately becoming as strong as their ties to one another.

Story
Allan Gurganus's Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All became an instant classic upon its publication. Critics and fans alike fell in love with the voice of 99-year-old Confederate widow Lucy Marsden, one of the most entertaining and loquacious heroines in American literature. Lucy married at the turn of the 20th century, when she was 15 and her husband was 50. If Colonel William Marsden was a veteran of the "War for Southern Independence", Lucy became a "veteran of the veteran" with a unique perspective on Southern history and Southern manhood.

Has some wisdom in it
This book shows how people can grow foolish or wise, loving or tight and alone as they age. The century and education don't even matter. The book spans generations and families, following the thread of music. Lee smith is fabulous.

Lyrical
This book was written to be listened to, each character has their own voice which brings them to life and the music enhances the story - makes you feel you are part of it. The book is a journey, with characters who are real people - both good and bad at the same time, facing life and doing the best they know how to survive it. Get this book, kick back and get ready to meet some memorible people.

Several generations of a family
I thought this story told over several generations of a family of music lovers and singers was well-told. The narration was excellent, with both male and female narrators where appropriate. Tunes were sung where they occurred, and sung well. It's true that some of the story is a little soap opera-y, but I didn't think it was overdone at all. I enjoyed it quite a lot.

Devil's Dream is a Nightmare
I found this book to bear no resemblance to the descriptions posted. It is cornier and trashier than most bad country western tunes. The chapters run on with details that never seem to have relevance to the plot and none of the characters are attractive.

A Southern Soap Opera
The plot is interesting to start, but as the book drags on, the same type of characters (none likeable) reoccur in each succeeding generation. It gets tedious way before the story ends. The use of different narrators is a plus.

Not my favorite
i can't even finish it. I have liked every other book I have read by Lee Smith and recommended them to others but I just can't get all these parts of stories strung together. Add in the foul language and over exaggerated accents of the readers and I just gotta stop it.
