Story
Dr. Dylan Reinhart wrote the book on criminal behavior. Literally—he's a renowned, bestselling Ivy League expert on the subject. When a copy of his book turns up at a gruesome murder scene—along with a threatening message from the killer—it looks like someone has been taking notes. Elizabeth Needham is the brilliant NYPD Detective in charge of the case who recruits Dylan to help investigate another souvenir left at the scene—a playing card. Another murder, another card—Dylan suspects that the cards aren't a signature, but a deadly hint, pointing toward the next victim.

In January 1982, an elderly white widow was found brutally murdered in the small town of Greenwood, South Carolina. Police immediately arrested Edward Lee Elmore, a semiliterate, mentally retarded black man with no previous felony record. His only connection to the victim was having cleaned her gutters and windows, but barely ninety days after the victim’s body was found, he was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Elmore had been on death row for eleven years when a young attorney named Diana Holt first learned of his case.

As a cop, Ron Previte was corrupt. As a mobster, he was brutal. And in his final role, as a confidential informant to the FBI, Previte was deadly. The Last Gangster is his story—the story of the last days of the Philadelphia Mob, and of the clash of generations that brought it down once and for all. Convinced that the honor of the "business" was gone, he became the FBI's secret weapon in an intense and highly personalized war on the Philadelphia mob, operating with the same guile, wit, and stone-cold bravado that had made him a force in the underworld.

Story
On June 7, 1998, James Byrd, Jr., a 49-year-old black man, was dragged to his death while chained to the back of a pickup truck driven by three young white men. It happened just outside of Jasper, a sleepy East Texas logging town that, within 24 hours of the discovery of the murder, would be inextricably linked in the nation's imagination to an exceptionally brutal, modern-day lynching. In this superbly written examination of the murder and its aftermath, award-winning journalist Joyce King brings us on a journey that begins at the crime scene.

Great book
I really enjoyed this book. I had never heard of Slotnick so hearing some of his best cases only didn’t bother me. I did feel like the reading was very monotone but his accent was perfect for the story. I definitely recommend this book!

Narration
The story line was amazing as usual with James Patterson. However, the narration was awful. Sounded like he reading a grocery list with no emotion or anticipation. And his enunciation of certain words hurt my ears.
James Patterson is an amazing writer, but this narrator did him no justice.

The narrator was dull, hard to follow. I wished I would have known this was a biography. I could have looked it up, and not been subjected to nine hours that I'm not getting back. He sure got a lot of guilty people off and lived a life of wealth.

Good account of extraordinary defense attorney
Recommended for fans of courtroom books. Patterson offers many colorful anecdotes about Slotnick, and focuses on a couple of his most celebrated victories. I wish he had told each story sequentially, rather than cutting back and forth between them, which makes them harder to follow.

Justice or not
While I think it’s sickening that thugs, murderers, and criminal offenders get off because their attorney is a good actor, story teller, or perhaps good at coaching their clients into a false narrative, I do admit the details of the cases are very interesting. The reader was excellent, and it’s a page turner for certain.

The story is very interesting but the reader is stilted and sounds uncomfortable with his story. I assumer he's related somehow but this would have been even better with another reader.
