About this listen

2016 BRAM STOKER AWARD NOMINEE FOR BEST NOVEL

There are places we were never meant to go...

A woman searching for a sister lost at sea.
A man bent on finding lost treasure.
A mother who has lost all hope.
A maniac who believes all life exists for his pleasure.
The man who would keep them all safe.

Together, they will all seek below the waves for treasures long buried, and riches beyond belief. But those treasures hide something. Something ancient, something dark. A creature that exists only to feed on those that would enter into its realm. A creature... of The Deep.

Great at Sea Horror

The story was suspenseful and creepy. How did the ocean rise up 700 feet and why was there a boat on the bottom of thr ocean which wasn't there before? A fun and easy listen with a great narration. If you like underwater/at sea horror give this one a try.

Breathlessly, Relentlessly Riveting

The pressure builds above and below the water in this outstanding tale of supernatural terror.

Deep Sea Horror

I read this book three years ago and enjoyed it so much that when I was given the opportunity to listen, I jumped at it.
MBC has certainly done his homework which makes the story all the more credible with the convincing detail. I learned a lot about various aspects of deep sea diving which added to my enjoyment.

The story revolves around one woman's search for her sister, thought to have gone missing while on a dive. The main characters are genuine, like-able and relatable and are supported by a great back-up cast of varying depths of humanity. The interaction between them all is what makes it so good. MBC gives you just enough of the back story for each character, enough to understand what horrors could potentially lie ahead for them. Those horrors come from multiple, equally scary, sources.

It's an extremely visual book, almost like it was written for the big screen, (which I would love to see) and my imagination was invaded by a clear picture of what was happening in each scene.
There was a clear moralistic aspect to the characters with an insight into their deepest, darkest fears and desires.

I'm quite new to audiobooks and am still getting used to the slower pace of the narration. The narrator was clear and did a good job with distinguishing the many character voices but I did find the female voices slightly weak (forgivable). I like a little bit of humour with my horror and MBC gets it spot on but sometimes the narrator missed this, I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't already read the book though.

The book doesn't give you all the answers and possibly leaves you with questions, this just adds to the suspense and enjoyment for me. I would definitely recommend it and would also suggest checking out Michaelbrent Collings other books, in particular The Colony series and The Sword Chronicles.

As If I Needed More Reason To Be Afraid Of The Sea

There's a lot in the ocean to be afraid of. Sharks, giants squids, jelly fish, etc. The pressure from diving too deep. And just the water itself. So it makes for a good setting for a horror book, where you really don't need to add all that much to ramp up the fear. So I really appreciate Collings going the extra mile to creep me out.

The Deep has an ensemble cast, all who get a viewpoint. Collings does a great job of switching between viewpoints early on to set expectations, and uses each viewpoint to add just a bit more to the story. And he doesn't skimp on making the viewpoints interesting and unique from each other. Even the characters you're meant to hate, you hate for different reasons.

I quite enjoyed this book, and found myself drawn to keep reading it more and more the creepier it got. Highly recommended.

Pretty good read

The story is a little slow to take off and didn't grab me and pull me in right away. I did get a little confused with some of the timing but by the middle of the book I caught on.
