About this listen

"Few audiobooks warrant turning off all distractions, closing one's eyes, and simply listening to the story unfold. Narrator Caitlin Davies creates just that experience as she passionately guides listeners through this gripping story of ambition, love, and desire."—AudioFile on The Shadows Between Us

The Darkness Within Us is a wickedly delightful companion novel to Tricia Levenseller's The Shadows Between Us.

Chrysantha Stathos has won.

By hiding her intelligence and ambition behind the mask of a beautiful air-headed girl, she has become a wealthy duchess. And, once her elderly husband dies, she will have all the freedom, money, and safety she’s ever wanted.

Or so she thought.

A man claiming to be the estranged grandson of Chrysantha’s lecherous late husband has turned up to steal her inheritance. To make matters worse, her little sister is going to be queen and is rubbing it in her face.

Chrysantha decides that the only thing to do is upstage Alessandra at her own wedding. And as for this grandson, he has to go. Never mind that he’s extremely handsome and secretive with mysterious powers . . . No, Chrysantha wants Eryx Demos dead, and in the end, a Stathos girl always gets what she wants.

Wow!

I couldn't stop listening! I finished it in 1 day. I love Chrysantha! She is fearless and smart, a dangerous combination. I love how accepting she is, too, of Ericks' supernatural side and how she cares for her servants. Though he served in the military and had to grow up quickly, I enjoyed seeing Ericks' playful side; he's 18 and it shows. I love the back & forth between them, the building tension and love. I think the ending was rushed a bit, but still a fabulous story.

Just as great as the first book!

I just absolutely love this author. The morally gray characters are so refreshing and likable. I also love the continued theme of women being allowed to love without compromising their goals. The dialogue flows so well. Unnatural dialogue is something that has made me stop listening to so many other books.

Dissatisfied

I was hoping to get a part 2 of the first book but no. The narrator is great. The story is bad. The female MC is insufferable and the story screams bad interpretation of feminism all the way to the end!

Overall I’m disappointed.

The narration of her sister felt weird because she was made to sound weirdly old, aristocratic and unlikeable which didn’t match the tone she had in the shadows between us.
Also… this was a terrible book… it was hard to get through. The duke was unlikeable for two thirds of the book, the duchess was angry all the time. At least I could follow along and the romance was ok. Scene descriptions were good, no real spice, wish we would have explored the dream stuff more because that was literally never explained.
I HIGHLY recommend the first book because I really loved that one but you should definitely skip this one.
