About this listen

Snake oil salesman Dr. Darius Darke and other "legends" of the Old West are called upon to fight a band of brain-eating bandits in a three-dimensionally-challenged box canyon. This story is a prequel to David Bain's full-length weird Western novel Riders Where There Are No Roads. David Bain is the author of Death Sight, the first novel in the Will Castleton psychic detective series, Gray Lake: A Novel Of Crime And Supernatural Horror and several short story collections. do you like westerns? do you like lovecraft?

yes I did love it. at 45 minutes it wasn't nearly long enough. the performance was great and the battle was engaging. I would be interested in more episodic Audible content.

THE NARRARATOR SOLD ME!

What did you love best about The Cowboys of Cthulhu?

I loved the voice of the NARRARATOR! He appropriately tells the story to make you anxious to hear the next chapter and learn what comes next! The story starts off full of action and were it a book, I would not be able to put it down.

What other book might you compare The Cowboys of Cthulhu to and why?

This is my first foray into this genre. I love it and will look for more!

Have you listened to any of Daniel Penz’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is right up on the top with the best of Mr. Penz's other works.

Any additional comments?

I'm off to find more by this Author/Narrarator combo!

western set in world where Cthulhu stirs

set in 1870s, western posse sets out to track down some murdering cowpokes. the rumor is their faces aren't human though they are human shaped. eventually the two forces meet and an end is reached with hunts of still impending doom.
the author was also able to show why smart not to tick a bear off.
narrator voice and tone remindful of old radio shows
note: descriptions of people used language of that time. trigger warning.

THEY ATE MY HUSBAND'S BRAINS!!

I SLEEP WHILE READING
I think Bain tried to cram too much in a short format. This is funny in places, but mostly just silly. He went to a lot of trouble to set up some colorful characters and than killed them off five minutes later.

THE MONSTER WAS A TERRIBLE SHOT
I already have the full length novel (four hours?) in my library. I hope the longer length helps to flesh out a better story with better character development.

The Cowboys of Cthulhu

This was certainly a prequel. It was short and more of an intro to a bigger story. I enjoyed it and found myself laughing and engaged. I listened to the audiobook and loved that the version I have bleeped out the curse words... it made it so much better. I have no idea if every version has this or not... I hope so. It was a nice, short change of pace from the extremely long and drawn out The Great and Secret Show and it was also a nice turn on the Cthulhu mythos. I plan on picking up the next/first book in the series.

Fun

Worth a few dollars. In a way it's in keeping with the mythos-pulpy shanty horror.

Important Set Up for the next Novel

The Cowboys of Cthulhu is a very quick short story introducing the Riders of the Weird West series. It revolves around a gunfight in which the heroes discover that their opponents are far from human. As the titles suggests, Cthulhu is interested in our planet and it’s up to a couple of gunslingers to try and stop it from breaking through into our world. I liked the story, but it’s mostly useful in setting up the next (technically the first) book in the series. So read it to meet key characters in the coming book and get a taste for things to come.

Lovecraft would be proud

A great short story. It mixes the Wild West legends with a character of the authors creation and they must hunt down a trio of brain eating ghouls. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher
