About this listen

A detective and an FBI agent join forces on what seems like an open-and-shut case — but a new rash of killings sends them on a pulse-pounding race against time in this intense thriller.

Michael and Megan Fitzgerald are siblings who share a terrifying past. Both adopted, and now grown — Michael is a long-haul truck driver, Megan a college student majoring in psychology — they trust each other before anyone else. They've had to. Their parents are public intellectuals, an Ivy League clinical psychologist and a renowned psychiatrist, and they brought up their adopted children in a rarefied, experimental environment. It sheltered them from the world's harsh realities, but it also forced secrets upon them, secrets they keep at all costs.

In Los Angeles, Detective Garrett Dobbs and FBI Agent Jessica Gimble have joined forces to work a murder that seems like a dead cinch. Their chief suspect is quickly identified and apprehended — but then there's another killing just like the one they've been investigating. And another. And not just in Los Angeles — the spree spreads across the country. The Fitzgerald family comes to the investigators' attention, but Dobbs and Gimble are at a loss — if one of the four is involved, which Fitzgerald might it be?

From coastal California to upstate New York, Dobbs and Gimble race against time and across state lines to stop an ingenious and deeply deranged killer — one whose dark and twisted appetites put them outside the range of logic or experience.

Good story left me wanting more!

Good story that’s very gripping. The ending left me wanting more detail. It’s so detailed then the end felt rushed.
Also, most voices were great, except the voice for Michael, he spoke so awkward and choppy.

Great story, terrible conclusion

It was riveting until the end when it desended into chaos. The narration was excellent but the ending just left you confused. It's impossible to say much about the plot without giving awayvtwists and turns. Just when you think you're getting a handle on it there's another plot twist. For me the ending ruined it. im sorry for the lost time spent listening to it

Wow!!!!!!!

Hands down one of the best books I’ve read. A real nail bitter from the start. Never saw it coming. A must read or listen. I will be buying the hard copy to add to my library

Interesting a great twist.

Narration was horrible. She was attractive but sounded like an old woman. Same with the men. Bad narration.

Confusing to follow at the end

I am still not sure what the ending really meant. I love JP this is the first one that didn’t get 4 stars.

When you think you know, you’re so wrong

Delightfully twisty w/ some absolutely delicious plotting... As soon as you think you’ve got it figured, you’re wrong, and it continues in such a way through the entire story.... Reminded me of the De Palma Lithgow flick Raising Cain...

Great until I Lost the Story

I really enjoyed this book, right up to the final 20 minutes or so. Author J.D. Barker builds the suspense as a number of murders appear to be committed by one man. Perhaps too conveniently. Is the person of interest a serial killer or just an ordinary guy working for a living and otherwise living an unremarkable life? Did the childhood trauma revealed during the narrative change him subconsciously, or was he what he appeared to be?

The plot kept me guessing at every turn. Multiple perps? Multiple personalities? A coordinated effort? A frame-up of an innocent man. Barker developed his characters well. I as a listener had no trouble keeping the characters separate and following the plot as it ranged from the present to flashbacks into the past to written testimony from a person directly connected to the person of interest.

But the resolution left me feeling empty. I tried to reconcile the end with so many parts of the story. It just doesn't make sense. I read a lot of mysteries published under the James Patterson brand. This is the first that I finished without being able to go back in my mind and reconcile the key aspects of the action with the resolution of the story.
