Acerca de esta escucha

This dark epic fantasy follows the heirs of four noble houses—each gifted with a divine power—as they form a tenuous alliance to keep their kingdom from descending into a realm-shattering war.

The Four Realms—Life, Death, Light, and Darkness—all converge on the city of dusk. For each realm there is a god, and for each god there is an heir.

But the gods have withdrawn their favor from the once vibrant and thriving city. And without it, all the realms are dying.

Unwilling to stand by and watch the destruction, the four heirs—Risha, a necromancer struggling to keep the peace; Angelica, an elementalist with her eyes set on the throne; Taesia, a shadow-wielding rogue with rebellion in her heart; and Nik, a soldier who struggles to see the light—will sacrifice everything to save the city.

But their defiance will cost them dearly.

I genuinely enjoyed the second half of this book, you just have to get through part 1 and half of 2 before it starts to click.

I was easily confused while listening to this book, you get different character points of view out of left field at times and it's hard to follow.

The magic in this universe is very interesting, and I love that shadow magic was a main focus point.
I'll be picking up the second book in the series specially for Tasia, because wow what a character to have in any story.

Definitely recommend if you can get past the confusing parts.

Wasn't bad but..

Loved the accents and voice changes for each character it really made them individuals and brought them to life.

Well told

Holy crap. The City of Dusk was so phenomenal that I’m almost not even mad about that killer cliffhanger. Almost, lol.

Well rounded, complex characters that I fell in love with. Cool worldbuilding & magic system. Excellent narration/performance.

Also FYI, so no one else feels dumb like I did: the thing all the characters reference that shut off their realm from the other realms is called “the Sealing” (with an S), not “the Ceiling” (with a C) like I thought for half the book til I briefly switched over to reading the ebook for a bit while I waited for my headphones to charge, lol. “The Sealing” made way more sense than “The Ceiling” in context once I knew better, but you obviously can’t see the spelling of words when you’re listening to an audiobook so I just thought it was a similar concept to how people talk about “the glass ceiling” and went with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Phenomenal fantasy

I liked how diverse the characters were in this story. The writing was also very beautiful but it took a while for things to develop. Bring on book 2.

Diverse Story

It took me quite awhile to get through this book. There is a large cast which I think is why it tool a long time for everything to really pick up. I appreciate how queer this book is and I love the magic system and the characters themselves are very well written. The narration was often confusing, especially towards then end because the pov would change rapidly and frequently without breaks/pauses to indicate the change. I could go without the second book honestly but I'll give it a shot because I want to see these queer relationships develop and experience the new setting.

Queer but just okay

overall this book was pretty good but it jumped times a lot and got a little confused. liked the character development and the world just would have liked it better if time jumps were not as jarring

Intresting story of Darkness and power

only thing about the audiobook is that it would switch viewpoints without a break or warning and half the time you wouldn't even know what was going on

it was okay

Overall the story was pretty good, there were a lot of POV changes that was easy enough to follow. All the characters had really great growth and development through out the book. I love the diversity show in each character and house. As you read through or listen to the book you don’t know which house you want to win the throne. Also the ending has a huge plot twist that you won’t see coming.
As for the narrator, she was really good. She gave different accents to the character that match the culture they represented. However, I don’t like how she didn’t distinguish her voice been male and female characters. Besides the accents, her voice stays the same regardless of the gender. It kind of doesn’t give the full potential of each character and was kind of disappointing.
Besides that, I would recommend this book to anyone! I can’t for the next one to come out!

Game of Thrones meets Clue, narrator could be better

Tara Sim’s world building is not only well thought out, but fantastic and unique. The narrator is lovely to listen to — I was wary of her flatter, hushed tones at first but it ended up being perfect for the tone of such a dark and sinister story. Not to mention she handles 4 very different accents to bring to life each character’s heritage/backgrounds. I can’t wait for the next in this series!

Impatiently waiting for the next book…

I loved the reader's voice. I loved the story and the characters

I can see why people would complain about too many characters. I agree, but they honestly weren't that hard to keep separated. I do wish she cut down the main characters to fewer, but lessons learned.

Still a great story and a fun time!

I loved it!
