After con man Greg Moxley married Rhoda Lorton, he took her money and flew - only to have his plane crash. Years later, Rhoda weds millionaire scion Carl Montaine. But now Moxley has turned up alive and well...with plans to pocket the Montaine fortune - or else make Rhoda's bigamy public. Desperate to protect the good name of Montaine, Rhoda seeks out Perry Mason. But before Mason can reel in Moxley, somebody murders the scheming blackmailer. In a case that abounds in lethal twists, Perry Mason suddenly finds himself on a collision course with a cold-blooded killer.

Typical Perry Mason Style

If this was a real lawyer, I'd keep him on retainer. He takes care of his clients without hesitation. He's swarthy but cool & manipulative but kind.

When a woman appears in his office & peaks his attention, you better believe P.M. is on the case.

very good series

Beware...turn off auto update in your kindle and only update books that do not have the audio book companion. In August of this year kindle updated some of the Perry Mason books (this was one of them) and during the update the audio part has disappeared from 24 books. Luckily I can still listen to them through Audible....but I miss read/listening to these 24 books. This book is one of my favorite Perry Mason books....love the narrator...I've revisited this book at least 6 times.....I sure hope Kindle/Audible fix the problem so I get back the 24 combos.

Another masterfully written “who-done-it”

These audio versions of ESG’s great mysteries are as engaging as the Raymond Burr series, if not more so, because author’s amazingly complex plots were difficult to capture in an hour TV show. Like listening an old time radio series due to Cendese’s talent with voice characterization. Being an attorney myself I appreciate the accuracy with which the trial and legal references are portrayed in these novels.

Acting and story are great as always. Some good twists and turns, of course!

Too tricky

I am not a lawyer but Perry's trickery seems over the top and illegal. That is the reason for the 3 star story review. Other than that, it is a good, typical Perry Mason story.

Perry Mason Gumshoe Lawyer

These original stories portray a very different lawyer than the one from the TV series. In the books he has more of a Gumshoe detective personality, more Bogart than Burr. The stories are a lot of fun.

Next Day's Headlines "PERRY MASON DIS-BARRED"

Most of the Perry Mason books are really good. This one is good if you can get past the fact that all the witness and evidence tampering and some rather strange legal advice to folks might just lose Perry his practice. I dunno - maybe things were different in the 1930s and lawyers had a lot more leeway - but I feel that he couldn't have gotten away with most of this stuff in 18th century England, let alone 20th century Los Angeles.
