Acerca de esta escucha

It is early February, 1799, a year of war.

Sailing in the Caribbean, Captain Alan Lewrie, Royal Navy, is once again pursuing a chimera. A rich French prize ship he'd left at anchor at Dominica has gone missing, along with six of his sailors.

What starts as a straightforward search for it, and them, from Hispaniola to Barbados, far down the Antilles, leads Lewrie to a gruesome discovery on the Dry Tortugas and to a vile cabal of the most pitiless and depraved pirates ever to sail under the "Jolly Roger", and the suspicion that one of his trusted hands just may be the worst of them all.

Against his will - again - the usually irrepressible Lewrie is made his superiors' "cat's-paw" once more, and his covert mission this time is to go up the Mississippi in enemy-held Spanish Louisiana to the romantic but sordid port of New Orleans in search of pirates and prize, where one false step could betray Lewrie and his small party as spies. Beguilements, betrayal, and death lurk 'round every corner of the Vieux Carre, and it's up to Lewrie's quick but cynical wits to win the day for their survival, and wreak a very personal vengeance on his foes.

I absolutely loved this book! the first Dewey Lambdin book I have ever read and I was hooked! I had to start with the first book and work up the series. I haven't been disappointed so far.

I've listened to every navel historical fiction available... I was hooked on the genre after stumbling upon Patrick OBrians Aubrey-Machurin series. The finest naval series ever written, better even than Hornblower. This series is entertaining and worth a listen, but pales in comparison to O'Brian. A good, lighthearted edition to the series. It should be noted this installment has very little sea action.

This has been the best book in the Alan Lewrie series so far. Do not skip; do not listen to the negative commenters.

Would you try another book from Dewey Lambdin and/or John Lee?

yes

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed this series but this one is a solid miss! 9 hours into the book before the action begins, too much awkward sex, and most of the earlier characters are missing. Even try as he may, John Lee could not save this story.

SKIP THIS ONE

Big fan of the series. Just not this book which just meanders all over the place

Agree. Skip it

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I won't recommend this book to anyone.

Has The Captain's Vengeance turned you off from other books in this genre?

It may. I have read all of the previous books. There are two more out now. If I'm not happy with the next one, I will give up on the series.

What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

John is my favorite narrator. I search his name on audible to look for books I might enjoy. He's the reason I found this series to begin with.

I wish Daniel Silva had continued to use him for his Gabriel Allon series.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

John Lee, but even he couldn't save it.

Any additional comments?

I gave up on the book 9 hours in. The plot is tedious, the characters are tedious, the sex scenes are tedious. Maybe it eventually goes somewhere, but Lambdin phoned this one in, and I'm moving on.

I rarely ask Audible to refund my purchase, but am considering it.

Skip this one, indeed.
