Here are two hilarious Jamaican folktales about the original story spinner himself, both read by Denzel Washington. Anansi the spider is teeny-teeny, but his boasts are as tall as tales get. In the first story, Anansi takes Tiger's challenge and outwits the prideful snake to win possession of all the stories in the jungle. In the second story, Anansi devises a scheme to appear important at his mother-in-law's funeral but gets caught in his own lies and winds up as bald as a mango.

Story
To the Chinese the dragon is not an evil creature, but is a god and the friend of men who worship him. He "holds in his power prosperity and peace." Ruling the waters and the winds, he sends the good rain, is hence the symbol of fecundity. In the Hsia dynasty two dragons fought a great duel until both disappeared, leaving only a fertile foam from which were born the descendants of the Hsia. Thus, the dragons came to be looked upon as the ancestors of a race of heroes. This is the story of China at War.

This searing novel, originally banned in China but later named one of that nation's most influential books, portrays one man's transformation from the spoiled son of a landlord to a kindhearted peasant. After squandering his family's fortune in gambling dens and brothels, the young, deeply penitent Fugui settles down to do the honest work of a farmer. Forced by the Nationalist Army to leave behind his family, he witnesses the horrors and privations of the Civil War, only to return years later to face a string of hardships brought on by the ravages of the Cultural Revolution.

One of my favorites as a kid
In the late 90’s and early 00’s I used to fall asleep to Rabbit Ears stories on CD. So happy to have found them all on audible so that I can play them for my kids now. Brings back happy memories. The production is truly incredible, just the pinnacle. The music is lovely to listen to as well.
I find this one especially soothing.
Upon revisiting this story I have to wonder if the boy who drew cats is maybe neurodivergent. He is described as bright and clever, struggles to do mundane tasks such as gathering food and copying scrolls, but seems involuntarily hyper focused on his special interest, even when it is not socially acceptable. This proves to be his superpower in the end. I love this story from that perspective.

Certainly a gold standard for tale-telling...
This is a gorgeous, gentle version of an amazing story. William Hurt's non assuming narration along with the usual dead-on professionalism of the Rabbit Ears series make this 100% gold.

Haunting
I first checked this story out of the library in Houston on CD back in the 1990s. It has haunted me ever since. Such an unusual and mysterious tale, and the narration is perfect. Well worth the price.
