About this listen

A debut novel full of magic, adventure, and romance, The Book of Doors opens up a thrilling world of contemporary fantasy for fans of The Midnight Library, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue, The Night Circus, and any modern story that mixes the wonder of the unknown with just a tinge of darkness.

Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading.

But this is no ordinary book…

It is the Book of Doors.

Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

Then she’s approached by a gaunt stranger in a rumpled black suit with a Scottish brogue who calls himself Drummond Fox. He’s a librarian who keeps watch over a unique set of rare volumes. The tome now in Cassie’s possession is not the only book with great power, but it is the one most coveted by those who collect them.

Now Cassie is being hunted by those few who know of the Special Books. With only her roommate Izzy to confide in, she has to decide if she will help the mysterious and haunted Drummond protect the Book of Doors—and the other books in his secret library’s care—from those who will do evil. Because only Drummond knows where the unique library is and only Cassie’s book can get them there.

But there are those willing to kill to obtain those secrets. And a dark force—in the form of a shadowy, sadistic woman—is at the very top of that list.

Editorial Review

Equal parts adventure and fantasy
Seeing Miranda Raison (who exceptionally narrated one of my favorites, Lessons in Chemistry) as the performer, plus the stunning cover in The Book of Doors was all the convincing it took for me to download the title. The story is centered on Cassie Andrews, a bookstore employee who inherits a mysterious book with strange inscriptions from an elderly customer who was very dear to her. Shorty after Cassie discovers how to use the book—which can open a door to anyplace she desires—she’s approached by Drummond Fox, a librarian who not only claims that there is danger coming for Cassie, but that he is the only one who can help. The Book of Doors is equal parts adventure and fantasy that, combined with Raison’s stellar performance, has left me wondering if we will hear more about other "books" from debut author Gareth Brown. — Audible Editor, Patty R.

The author did a great job with time travel. I love books about books and books about time travel when it is done correctly. This book surprised me with its stories and the interweaving of time.

Awesome!

I absolutely loved this book! The narrator was wonderful and the twists and turns of the story made it unpredictable. It was both heartwarming and dark at times. I hope this is the first in a series!

A very imaginative story

This is one of my favorite books of all time. Seriously brilliant, compelling & mind boggling. I couldn’t stop listening to it and am so sad it’s over. I hope this author has more books coming! The narration is also 10/10.

I was a huge fan of the Midnught Library, so I had to read this one after seeing it described as “made for fans of The Midnight Library” and it did not disappoint. There were so many unexpected twists and turns, I was entertained and intrigued throughout the entire book. I hardly guessed any of the twists correctly, which is always so refreshing. There were some parts that I would have to relisten just to make sure I got all the details. However, I typically can’t be bothered to do that unless I’m really invested in a book and don’t want to miss anything. I actually listened to the last 3 chapters twice because I wasn’t ready for it to end!
By the end you love every character that you are supposed to and you really hate every antagonist.

I could go on, but all in all it’s worth the credit!
