About this listen
A killer is at work in the supposedly safe commuter belt. DCI Gillard needs answers fast....
Promising architect Peter Young is shot dead at his desk. DCI Craig Gillard is on the scene, looking at what appears to be a brutal and highly professional hit: two bullets, fired with ice-cold calm. Gillard knows that the most crucial question in solving the crime is one word: why?
Two weeks later, on the Lincolnshire coast, another body is found on a windswept beach. In this case there is no identity for the young man, just a curious brand burned into his neck. As the mystery deepens, Gillard is plunged into a case without answers, finding himself up against dark forces - people who believe in only two things: blood and a warped code of honour. This time lives are on the line, children's lives - as well as his own.
At breakneck pace and with a jaw-dropping twist, the suspense-filled second DCI Gillard crime thriller is perfect for fans of Robert Bryndza, Patricia Gibney and Faith Martin.

To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Story
Alan Gregory is a clinical psychologist with a thriving practice in Boulder, Colorado. His life begins to unravel when one of his female patients is found in an apparent suicide and the local paper begins printing accusations from an unnamed source of sexual impropriety between the woman and Dr. Gregory. He launches a psychological and personal quest for the truth that rapidly intensifies when more of his patients die untimely deaths, and Gregory suspects not only that the deaths are related but that another one of his patients may be somehow involved. Lacking facts but roused by suspicion and troubled by seemingly random acts of terror around him, Gregory starts to fear for the safety of the people he loves. The question of the inviolability of confidential disclosures made to Gregory by his patients - privileged information - becomes crucial as the psychologist pursues an unsettling romance with Lauren Crowder, a lovely deputy district attorney investigating one of the deaths. Bound to silence, Gregory follows the psychological tracks of someone he fears may be a cunning and disturbed killer, while turning to his enigmatic but supportive partner, Diane Estevez, for counsel, and to his tart-tongued female urologist neighbor for support. The sinister, surprising drama unfolds against Boulder's Rocky Mountain backdrop, in the arresting natural beauty of Aspen, and in the midst of a baroque Halloween costume party in downtown Boulder. Finally, in a lonely mountain lodge enshrouded in menace, the story comes to its breathtaking climax.

Solid story. No idea how it was going to turn out.
Well conceived. Well narrated. Love the authors writing style. Some light laugh moments but mostly serious and descriptive. As an American I like the British terms like torch, boot, punter, tart, and descriptive sayings that are different but understandable and kinda funny to hear.

Great narration helps propel this deep dive into Albania’s history and culture. The format was intriguing and the author creative —and his journalistic slant shines. Here in the US we don’t encounter much news of these countries on a regular basis. Grateful for this work.

Nick Louth is an Incredible Storyteller!
In his first 2 books Nick Louth has shown amazing abilities as a storyteller. He grabs you from the first page. You think you might know what's coming. Then he flips the story upside down, spins it around a couple times, and as a reader you just hold on for dear life. Pausing the story isn't an option. Finally the ending blows you away - it's something you never even saw coming! I have to say he is my new favorite author and I'm looking forward to reading his next book!

Book No 2 in this series is well worth listening to and in my opinion, more than once.
Narration is clearly understood, but still not certain about the various accents.

Odd title
Really enjoyed this, finished it in two days as I was painting the house. My only issue was that the title made zero sense to me!

Significantly better than its predecessor
I rated theme prior book 3 stars but stated I saw so much promise I was going to buy the second. This had a tight, fascinating story line with developed characters and a real feel for the misery of the Balkan states 20 years ago. Great dialogue, good rhythm. A fearless storyline showing life is not always what we imagine it. Bravo!

One of the Best in the Series
You’d think and you’d be right, that the rather lame and phoned in titles would tell you to pass this series over but don’t - get through the 1st and they improve.
