Publisher's summary

Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard, who is drawn into the investigation.

Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

Please put more of Nicks' books on audio!!!!

Kept my interest and great narrator.
Didn't want book to end.

Especially when I noted that none of his other books on audio!!! Just when I find a mystery writer I like audible disappoints!!!

Please Don't Waste a Credit

The beginning hooked me (despite some really bad writing at points) but it took a huge plunge right around a third of the way with the introduction of the American "feminist." What was that? Some monstrous cliché figure performed with absolutely the worst American accent I've ever heard. Fake, unreal, and oh yes, fake, with gratuitous misogyny thrown in. After that, I could not take the book seriously and all the "flaws" I ignored became intolerable. Like, we're supposed to believe this guy is still mooning over a 6 week fling when he was 18 30 years later? Never happen. Ridiculous. At the very least, she should have been a serious girlfriend. Pretty soon I realized what this book is: a bad writer has borrowed and cobbled together bits and pieces of decent police procedural novels to make a facsimile, but his very own characters and writing and plot fall apart into cliché, stupidity, obviousness, and silliness. I could not finish it.

Note: the Performance would have been a 4, without the "American" {????) accent. Otherwise it was pretty good, if a bit wooden during the narration.

Excellent book

Nick Louth’s book was excellent, and Marston York’s narration was superb. I’m definitely downloading more in this series.

rough start but glad I kept listening

the first chapter is almost the best. after that, it drags until maybe 2/3 through and then stuff gets intriguing. I don't love the main character. he's a bit of a narcissist, and kind of a jerk. I was irritated with how the author trivialized the female characters as objects, valued only for their looks. almost like it was written in the 70's, without the cars language. it ends about halfway through, which is weird, too. almost like someone else wrote some of the chapters. overall it was an intriguing mystery, which I didn't figure out till near the end. the narration was pretty good, maybe a tad flat, though that just be how he delivered the character. I'll try another by this author.

Interesting & Complex story line!

Twist & turns of this story line make this a true page turner, metaphorically speaking. The surprising finale was most inventive.
Found it was well written, not 100% enamored by the narrator, or perhaps the directions, with regard to the accents. Felt there was not clear distinction between characters on several occasions.

Other than the title ...

Although I did enjoy this book, and listened to it in only three sessions while crocheting, I guessed the central plot-line about a third of the way in.
Don't like doing that: I want to be wondering.
Still, it actually didn't put me off because I kept telling myself I could be wrong; but at the point where the characters should definitely have made the connection they still didn't and that reduced my enjoyment a bit.
I'm about to proceed to his second Body book, and as I've been returning books without doing more than reading the first chapter, that's a clear plus.
But the title ?
Naah. I believe that was come up with after the event and when the next one was in the offing.
Still, I did really enjoy it; and the narrator's various accents are bloody MARVELLOUS !

Not the brightest bulb of the bunch

Unfortunately, I was able to figure out the story early on in the book. That being said, the narrator did a good job, which helped keep my interest. The main detective seemed not too bright at times, and the story lulled a bit. Some of the characters did or acted in a way that I can't imagine, really would.

Never Really Left Port for Me

Favored the narrator. Starts out strong. Includes snippets of humor. Tragic that it lasted so long. It got tiresome as it dragged along. Reluctantly I listened to the end of the recording.
