Yaro Anatoly commands the most feared regiment on the continent. His loyalty to the king has seen him wage war in the savage wilderness of Vorgar, the lawless free cities, and in Akasha, the domain of the southern princes.
But when the death of a saint triggers a revolution at home, Yaro finds his own loyalties divided. Can he really serve a king who hates his own people? And who are these new gods?
The Black Hussars is a stand-alone novella, set in the days prior to the events that unfold in the Plagueborne trilogy.

The book follows Yaro the Commander of the Black Hussars who are Bear Cavalry. That's right BEAR CAVALRY, they ride Friggin Bears which is insanely cool. Yaro has been given a mission by the King which he doesn't really feel good about but really has no choice but to comply with.
The narration by Scott Miller is done quite well and I do enjoy his accent work. The story and military aspects are very interesting and the story seems fairly deep for a short story that is only 2 hours long.

Good Read

Mitchell Lüthi's novel follows The Black Hussars, a regiment loyal to King Behan. They are fierce, highly trained warriors who ride bears into battle. Lüthi shares history, lore and commentary to flesh out the world of Greater Virren. His novel portrays a very brief image of Virren, but he does a good job alluding to a much larger, more intricate world. None of the characters are particularly likable, as most come across as prideful and brash. Nonetheless, the narrative moves quickly enough to remain interesting throughout.
Scott Miller narrates this book, and he does a fine job. He portrays emotion in each of the characters, and no two characters sound alike. His work isn't overly compelling, but it get's the job done. His narration never detracts from the experience.
The biggest drawback is that The Black Hussers is incredibly short, clocking in at just over two hours. It's difficult to form a strong opinion on the world or characters. Even still, Lüthi shows potential in his work. It's worth checking out if you are interested in fantasy.

Set in a harsh time and place, characters some loyal and brave others cunning and mean.
The narrator was a great and I could listen to him all day.
I found the intermittant background sounds distracting and interupted the narration/story rather than enhancing it, thought some people might like it.
Overall I really enjoyed this story and it maked me want to read the series.
