Ben Carson MD
About this listen
Dr. Ben Carson is known as the originator of groundbreaking surgical procedures and a doctor who turns impossible hopes into joyous realities. But where does this incredible drive and focus come from? According to Dr. Carson himself, the answer is simple: The Big Picture.
Every day when Dr. Carson went to work as a surgeon, he had to make life-and-death decisions. For that reason, and because so many of the people and families he worked with had suddenly been forced to reconsider what's really important in life, he's spent a lot of his own time searching for perspective.
By finding a vision of something truly worth living for--something that shines a light on the best of his amazing talents, energy, and focus--Dr. Carson can discern what matters and leave the rest behind.
In The Big Picture, Dr. Carson sheds light on this life-changing philosophy, giving you the tools and encouragement you need to:
- View hardship as an advantage
- Determine what really matters
- See your life from a new perspective
The Big Picture is all about broadening your perspectives and finding a vision for your own life that can reframe your priorities, energize your efforts, and inspire you to change the world around you. Are you ready to see The Big Picture?

What is America becoming? Or, more importantly, what can she be if we reclaim a vision for the things that made her great in the first place? In America the Beautiful, Dr. Ben Carson helps us learn from our past in order to chart a better course for our future. From his personal ascent from inner-city poverty to international medical and humanitarian acclaim, Carson shares experiential insights that help us understand: What is good about America, where we have gone astray, and which fundamental beliefs have guided America from her founding into preeminence among nations.

In American Marxism, Mark Levin explained how Marxist ideology has invaded our society and culture. In doing so, he exposed the institutions, scholars, and activists leading the revolution. Now, he picks up where he left off: to hold responsible the true malefactors steering our country down the wrong path. Insightful and hard-hitting as ever, Levin proves that since its establishment, the Democrat Party has set out to rewrite history and destroy the foundation of freedom in America.

Story
In February 2013 I gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Standing a few feet from President Obama, I warned my fellow citizens of the dangers facing our country and called for a return to the principles that made America great. Many Americans heard and responded, but our nation’s decline has continued. Today the danger is greater than ever before, and I have never shared a more urgent message than I do now.

But his wife of more than 40 years knows him as so much more: A loving husband, a devoted father, a devout Christian, a committed philanthropist, and a fierce patriot. Now Candy Carson introduces us to the private side of a very public figure as she shares the inspiring story of their marriage and their family.

Story
In 2009, Mark R. Levin galvanized conservatives with his unforgettable manifesto Liberty and Tyranny, by providing a philosophical, historical, and practical framework for halting the liberal assault on Constitution-based values. That book was about standing at the precipice of progressivism’s threat to our freedom, and now, over a decade later, we’re fully over that precipice and paying the price. In American Marxism, Levin explains how the core elements of Marxist ideology are now pervasive in American society and culture.

Story
Margaret Heffernan argues that the biggest threats and dangers we face are the ones we don't see - not because they're secret or invisible, but because we're willfully blind. A distinguished businesswoman and writer, she examines the phenomenon and traces its imprint in our private and working lives, and within governments and organizations, and asks: What makes us prefer ignorance? What are we so afraid of? Why do some people see more than others? And how can we change?

Moving to America in 2008, Finnish journalist Anu Partanen quickly went from confident, successful professional to wary, self-doubting mess. She found that navigating the basics of everyday life - from buying a cell phone and filing taxes to education and childcare - was much more complicated and stressful than anything she encountered in her homeland. At first she attributed her crippling anxiety to the difficulty of adapting to a freewheeling new culture. But as she got to know Americans better, she discovered they shared her deep apprehension.

Uri Gneezy and John List are like the anthropologists who spend months in the field studying the people in their native habitats. But in their case they embed themselves in our messy world to try and solve big, difficult problems, such as the gap between rich and poor students and the violence plaguing inner city schools; the real reasons people discriminate; whether women are really less competitive than men; and how to correctly price products and services. Their field experiments show how economic incentives can change outcomes.

Does America no longer feel like home? Widespread divorce rates, the erosion of traditional marriage, the popular rise of radical ideologies, attacks on faith, and government interference are only a few of the factors contributing to the struggles of families in our culture. But it doesn't have to be this way. Like many of us, Dr. Ben Carson fears we are losing the country we love. In this provocative and ultimately hopeful book, he gives us the facts, inspiration, and theory-to-action answers we need to restore a key foundation of America: the family.

Good Book! Not the best narrator, but great story
Dr. Carson's life story is very interesting to me. I saw the Lifetime movie, Gifted Hands, and have been a fan since then. I've also seen him offering medical insight and political commentary on several news channels. I purchased 2 of his books. This book was good - very inspirational. Dr. Carson makes no apology for being a man of faith - I find that refreshing.
I did not however enjoy the narrator. This would have been so much better if Dr. Carson would have read it, but it was still a good story. I recommend it to anyone interested in a rags to riches story of how to overcome difficult circumstances.

Religious rubbish
[{ answer : If there was a warning that this book is filled with religious content. Disclaimer, I couldn't get very far through it before I was turned off, and am a fan of Sam Harris' atheist / philosophical / spiritual ideas - just to give an idea on my mini review. I also don't live in America, as I'd likely have known enough about this chap to never entertain buying this book in the first place.
The narrator does a good job, but the content of the book is probably a bit too preachy for atheists. I turned off not long after hearing him use the old \god works in mysterious ways\ rubbish after his patients die, followed shortly by him praying that he'd have a fun time on safari. Of course, the twins die, he sees some pretty animals, and all is well in the world. Hard to stomach life advice from someone who operates like that., type : Overall, question : What would have made The Big Picture better?, id : 55, typeString : overall }, { answer : , type : Story, question : Has The Big Picture turned you off from other books in this genre?, id : 23, typeString : story }, { answer : , type : Performance, question : What did you like about the performance?
