About this listen

In this compelling and heartfelt memoir, writer Molly McAleer chronicles the discovery of her father's addiction and subsequent death, how true love saved her life and how she kind of sort of got tricked into going to rehab. She knows you'll probably never believe her side of the story, so she also interviews friends, ex-friends, and her acupuncturist about her history of substance abuse, flailing through her twenties and what kind of person she really is.

About the Author:

Boston born and raised television writer, blogger, internet personality and HelloGiggles.com co-founder Molly McAleer currently resides in Los Angeles and lives in constant fear that she's going to be homeless or go to prison for committing vehicular manslaughter. Her writing has appeared on over 25 websites and her Twitter was hailed as "one of nine to follow amongst millions" by The New York Times. She needs to touch a dog (any dog) at least once a day and hates eating, people who make fun of Juggalos and the circus. You can listen to her advice podcast, Plz Advise on iTunes and SoundCloud.

Bitter and dismissive

I really wanted to love this book. I did enjoy her narration and bulleted takeaways and found it engaging. Unfortunately about halfway through all I got was negativity, denial, judgment, and poor insight. She really does know service to people seeking to recovery and/or treatment. There are some tender moments but she comes off judgmental and bitter. are the “interviews“ at the end of the book seem there to bolster her opinion and perpetuate her denial. This is not most peoples experience with recovery, and no one enters treatment in a cavalier manner as suggested. There are so many great books out there and treatment programs, this one should not be on your list.

Wow, she talks fast

While I enjoyed her story, I felt like I was watching 2 Broke Girls on crack. This woman talks so fast. It makes sense after learning she was a writer on the show. I'm finished and just staring blankly at absolutely nothing. I'm exhausted.

real💯

I really enjoyed this book & mainly bc she has a great voice, that actuaurlly drew me in. she spoke just the way I imagine she would if we were in a convo. I loved the real- ness in her words & how she explained her life story & the relationship she had with her father. I also want to say I can deff tell she was raised by a great mom that deff helped her make wise choices even as a young girl. & i loved how her mom let her choose to do the right & safe environment, w/ no pressure. you are a strong, brave & smart person. & honestly i feel inspired to do the same in my life. thank you! 💗

Best book I’ve got on audible so far!

I’m new to audible and even though I can read very well I hate to read books! Mostly because I’m one of those people that have to be doing something all of the time. This is the 5th book I’ve started and was captured from the start. Nothing is wrong with the author, and shame on anyone saying that “she’s not that person you want to be around”. Mental health is important and so is addiction and she’s speaking on it!

Enjoyed it!

Such an easy listen. Breezed through it.
The only question I have is... how does she manage to so many good friends in L.A., even if it's 25% out of over 100? I live in "the south" and people are extremely disingenuous.

I am that girl

Minus her experience with pot & pills, the drinker she was is who I was. Great book and funny!

You will love or hate her. I loved the book. I thought she was funny and introspective.
