About this listen

Had fate dealt Harold Henthorn an unimaginably cruel hand? Or was he a murderer?

Harold Henthorn wanted to do something special for his wife, Toni, on their 12th wedding anniversary. But the romantic hike he planned ended with her broken body lying at the bottom of a steep cliff. In the aftermath of Toni's shocking death, grief wasn't the only thing shared by her friends and family. So was suspicion.

Nearly 20 years before, Harold's first wife had also died under gruesome and mysterious circumstances - she was crushed to death under a car while changing a flat tire. Just as with Toni, the pair had been married for exactly 12 years.

Two accidents decades apart. Two tragedies in which Harold was not only the lone witness but the lone beneficiary, too. It was a coincidence too extraordinary to believe. This time, Harold would pay - in a true-crime story of vows broken and a family's fight for justice.

Fantastic

I was held the entire story, not only was this a tragic story the authors approach is Fantastic! I seldom give 5 stars on each point but I may have a new favorite author. It may seem silly however I even appreciated the epilogue when the writer humbly thanked the family for allowing him to tell their story. I have held onto a tragic story for many years hoping someday my tip could be passed along to an author I felt could tell the story with justice... I am currently contacting this author! I read hundreds of these stories every year and the one has taken a seat in the top 10.

Fantastic bit of true crime writing

I saw Mr. Hannan interviewed on Hulu’s “Wild Crime,” a very thorough 4-part series examining the evidence that not only had Harold Henthorn murdered his second wife Toni (he was convicted of that crime & sentenced to life in 2015) but also his first wife Lynn. I hadn’t been aware of the case prior to seeing the documentary so I looked up Caleb Hannan & found this excellent little book. The author clearly understands the moral peril every true crime writer faces when he or she mines a family’s pain for entertainment purposes & it shows. This is no sordid saga but rather a well-written exploration of Henthorn’s destruction of 2 wonderful human beings. We get to know both women through the voices of their families; they’re never reduced to mere corpses. Highly recommended if you enjoy well-researched, victim-focused true crime.

Well written. Well read.

This is the story of a selfish, grandiose narcissist and his victims. He is the kind who prey on Christian, submissive women. This needs to be acknowledged by Christian leaders for the abuse that it is, and women in this predicament need to be helped out of it, not shamed into staying in it.

Well done

I enjoyed the way this audiobook was written. It reads more like a novel than most true crime. books. I will look for more books by this author as well as more books read by the narrator.

Quick read

This book was a quick read and perfect for mindless relaxation on a vacation. It kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing what this psychopath would do next.
