Acerca de esta escucha

An eye-opening report from an award-winning author and former New York Times reporter reveals the link between teenage marijuana use and mental illness, and a hidden epidemic of violence caused by the drug - facts the media has ignored as the US rushes to legalize cannabis.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in nine states. Almost all Americans believe the drug should be legal for medical use. Advocates argue cannabis can help everyone from veterans to cancer sufferers. But legalization has been built on myths - that marijuana arrests fill prisons; that most doctors want to use cannabis as medicine; that it can somehow stem the opiate epidemic; that it is not just harmless but beneficial for mental health. In this meticulously reported audiobook, Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter, explodes those myths:

  • Almost no one is in prison for marijuana;
  • A tiny fraction of doctors write most authorizations for medical marijuana, mostly for people who have already used;
  • Marijuana use is linked to opiate and cocaine use. Since 2008, the US and Canada have seen soaring marijuana use and an opiate epidemic. Britain has falling marijuana use and no epidemic;
  • Most of all, THC - the chemical in marijuana responsible for the drug’s high - can cause psychotic episodes. After decades of studies, scientists no longer seriously debate if marijuana causes psychosis.

Psychosis brings violence, and cannabis-linked violence is spreading. In the four states that first legalized, murders have risen 25 percent since legalization, even more than the recent national increase. In Uruguay, which allowed retail sales in July 2017, murders have soared this year.

Berenson’s reporting ranges from the London institute that is home to the scientists who helped prove the cannabis-psychosis link to the Colorado prison where a man now serves a 30-year sentence after eating a THC-laced candy bar and killing his wife. He sticks to the facts, and they are devastating.

With the US already gripped by one drug epidemic, this audiobook will make listeners reconsider if marijuana use is worth the risk.

I learned a lot from this book. The author makes an overwhelming case about the dangers of marijuana, especially related to schizophrenia. I knew marijuana had a lot of negative side affects, but I had no idea those side affects include violent psychosis. I highly recommend this book, because I think it's important that people be educated on the subject by someone other than the marijuana lobby that's trying to get rich off it. We need to know the true risks and this book highlights some of them.

I learned a lot!

This book is the medicine we desperately need to cure us from our foolish fascination with canabus. The balance between facts and human experience make it go down smoothly. God have mercy on us all.

This book has excellent content. I wish every lawmaker in the US would read it. I also hope everyone else would read it. The listening experience could be so much nicer and easier to listen to if the reader would not accent every other or every few words. That was very distracting. Thank you tremendously for researching and writing this book

If you think marijuana is safe, listen to this Audible book. At just under 7 hours, very much worth the time, especially the last one third of the book. Good luck and all the best.

An important book to listen to.

I have worked in the licensed cannabis industry for 10 years. I have only heard, read and experienced the cannabis as a harmless, possibly medicinal plant. This book documents in great detail the fatal dangers of the intersection of high potency cannabis with mental illness. Case studies over the last 10 years prove that we do not fully understand the extent of the negative effects of cannabis.

Well researched counterpoint to pro cannabis lobby

Here I was.. thinking it should be legalized. Advocating for use..unbeknownst to me I was in informed. As a medical professional I thought I had done my research. I will be trying to get my friends and colleagues to read this and will be advocating for non-legalization.. thanks to the author for exemplary research and presentation. WOW.
