Acerca de esta escucha

When a sudden rainstorm disrupts an archeological dig at a remote Mayan site, site supervisor Deborah Miller makes an astonishing discovery: a collection of rubies so precious that generations of men have died - and killed - to possess them. Some believe the jewels harbor occult power; others believe they are the key to the arms race; still others see merely their potential for profit. But Deborah doesn’t want power or money - she only wants the truth.

And so she sets out to trace the stones’ complex history across four centuries and two continents, from Mexico to northern England, where the rubies once played a harrowing role in the Lancashire witch trials of 1612. But she is not the only one obsessed with the jewels; close on her heels is a notorious arms dealer who will stop at nothing, not even murder, to claim the prize for himself.

I enjoyed the story, especially the historical intrigue and occult undertones. my only complaint would be the sudden jumps between characters made it difficult to really connect with any one in particular.

Interesting yet complicated

This story is filled with suspense, intrigue and action. You'll have to follow closely or you'll lose the story line. I loved the complexity of the characters!

Very intriguing story!

The story starts out on an archaeological dig in the Yucatan. A new discovery is made and soon the problems start. Artifacts are stolen, people are killed. Deborah wants to learn more about what was found in the tomb so she follows the trail from Yucatan, to England, back to Mexico. There's plots and subplots that come together at the end. You learn about different places in both Mexico and England that were quite interesting.

The narrator was pretty good, although I was thinking Nick was English but at least half the time it sounded like she gave him a Scottish accent.

Archaelogical Thriller

Would you listen to Tears of the Jaguar again? Why?

It's a little slow to start, but once it gets going, it's a good book!

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Good ending - as you would hope!

What three words best describe Tanya Eby’s performance?

Narrator was easy to follow - at times fast.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not at first.

Grows on you!

this was okay but it it was way too descriptive. the narrator does a good job but the manuscript word count could be cut by 25% and not affect the story...

good story, but too much narration....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better narrator! I couldn't make it past a half hour - I couldn't take it.

What could A. J. Hartley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I may try reading it on my Kindle so I can give the story a chance

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tanya Eby?

Anyone

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I don't know I couldn't keep listening

Just couldn't keep listening

Too far fetched for my liking. Questionable pronunciation-still not sure whether the text read "interment" or, as was narrated "internment".

Contrived

I tried to listen to this one. Despite the fact the premise was clearly a direct port of every archeologist trope you can imagine ported into the modern world. It had a series of issues, but the bulk of them boiled down to two things. In the first instance the aforementioned tropes don't always work in the modern world and the main characters ability to consistently do the stupid thing, for the sake of the story, rather than the logical thing wore thin pretty quickly. Additionally, as an added feature, the story appears to randomly switch from one first person perspective to the next, from paragraph to paragraph, without reason or warning. When you combine this with the constant whining and inner turmoil of each characters thoughts that have little to no bearing on the story, you have an amazingly excruciating experience. I made it half way through this one and gave up. I would suggest you avoid this one altogether.

Don't bother

Took me ages to listen to this book, sitting in my library, so it was not suprising that I enjoyed, but no more. It is not a bad book, or badly delivered, its just there are soo many books out there.

mediocre Dan Brown/ romancing the stone

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It has a sub storyline of a family dispute between mother and daughter which was boring to say the least.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tears of the Jaguar?

The search for the truth was like a detective novel which I enjoyed.

What three words best describe Tanya Eby’s performance?

improve men's voices

Could you see Tears of the Jaguar being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Selena Gomes, Jennifer Lopez

Any additional comments?

This is definitely a woman's book, I needed a shot of testosterone after listening to it.
There were so many exploring emotions moments in the book it ruined the story, which if done differently could have been a good action/adventure book.

Interesting story line
