About this listen

Solomon Pace - Cold-blooded killer? Depraved evil sadist? A man just trying to make his way in the world? Or just deeply misunderstood? Of all my characters, Solomon Pace has to be one of the most complicated, but least understood.

In the "Storm Series" novels, he is always in the shadows, manipulating people and situations, and when he does come into the light, it is only to perform some dastardly deed before returning back into the inky gloom to continue his plotting.

With Tales of Solomon Pace, I knew straight away that I wanted to delve deeper into the background of the man and to give the listener glimpses of Solomon's past. To that end, I've produce a range of stories which will show different aspects of Solomon Pace, and give the listener additional insight to this very complicated and intriguing character. It also includes the Worldreader chosen story - "The Deadly Tap of a Cane".

Nothing is going to hold Solomon Pace back.

Solomon Pace is a character in the Storm Series novels. Exiled by his own, he doesn't accept his fate but rather uses his powers to climb to the top. Each story takes you through various dangerous encounters, where he attempts to regain power and control. He knows when someone is hiding their true intentions and wittingly calls them out. Those underneath him don’t question his ruthlessness, he even calls one of his underlings, Duncan, a guard dog.

Solomon Pace’s name was repeated a bit too much in the beginning. Not sure if this was due to the audiobook, but my brain wanted to keep a count. At the same time, it feels rightfully justified as it does provide one use. Solomon’s sense of self-importance leaked through and martialized through the narrator. Basically, even the narrator respects him.

To characters like Solomon, there is no shortage of enemies. In one of the stories, a character named Oliver has so much hate towards him that when he describes the pain and humiliation Solomon caused him, you can't help but feel bad for the guy. But this is not Oliver’s story. Solomon has an ambition that has no boundary. He will twist the truth, torture his captives under his will, and spread his influence on others. He doesn't sit behind a desk and command orders, he risks his life on the front lines to get what he wants, and he doesn’t do this blindly, as he is tactful in his schemes.

Without a doubt, Solomon is a heartless individual, who again, is gruesomely creative when it comes to finishing his enemies. While he will literally tear your heart out, he hides his own share of pain. When he’s tortured to his limit, you see visions of his past. These pull Solomon out of his callous self, where we see a man who is emotionally agitated by someone he considers dear.

I love character-driven stories as you don't know what the character will do, and what decisions they will make, leaving you on the edge of your seat.

Narrator Cari Scholtens has a soft and mature voice for this dark fantasy genre. Her clear voice fills every character’s voice with high and low sounds according to their personality. Her capture of male characters and accents is phenomenal.  I enjoyed how I can tell Solomon’s voice apart from all the rest. The pacing of the audiobook is perfect and steadily blends from one story to the next.
