Publisher's summary

It's the year 2277. For 50 years, Earth has received mysterious data transmissions from random locations in deep space. The streams include advanced technology, allowing humans to achieve faster-than-light travel virtually overnight. As we prepare to take our first tentative steps into interstellar space, we know almost nothing about our alien benefactors, and their motivations remain unexplained.

While completing their shakedown cruise, Captain Tom Prescott and the crew of the first Terran Fleet Command starship, TFS Ingenuity, stumble into a first contact situation. They learn that Earth is not the first civilization granted access to the stars before their time - and how this Faustian gift has inevitably led to centuries of interstellar war. Humanity's existence hangs in the balance as a powerful alliance assembles a preemptive military strike, believing it to be their only option to protect themselves...from us. Prescott and his small, initially unarmed starship must serve as our only line of defense. Ingenuity is our only hope.

Not too bad

I picked this up last week, needing a break from some of the LitRPG I've been listening too and this sounded pretty interesting.

I always like following Jeffery around, usually not too disappointed. But, I have to say this one was a little bit of a letdown. Only in story mind you, not his narration, can't ever fault the effort he puts in.

I think what bothered me was the length of this as much as the fact there was a great deal of information, backstory and other things that lead towards the sort of climax of the story and then into the possibility of a next book. I think there were lots of places that story was almost skimmed over, where I'd have liked to get to know some of the smaller details, the conversations and the actions that this huge world and writer could have explored.

Maybe walking us through some more about the tech advancements would have also helped. I love science in my story but also want to feel it fits right, I defo wanted more here too.

I did really think the characters were developed enough, I felt for them in all their situations, and even for the aliens that were visiting and fighting to help Earth. As for who is what and on whose side, I'm still not 100% sure. There's so much to ask and to hope we get some answers for. I'm very interested in the next book, so I'll look for it now, or keep my eye on Jeffery.

I do also think length wise this is a lot of set up for the rest of the series, and that this is a long-standing story that might well span a lot of books. So I might forgive this a little more.

Thanks for bringing me new writers and to the writer for the new worlds. :)

Too short

I get the feeling that this trilogy should have been a single book. There is a great level of detail (3+ chapters to land the ship??) to the point of thinking "Okay, get back to the story already." That being said, I enjoyed the book, but wish it was a little cheaper given the length.

Excellent Science Fiction

If you enjoy the military sci-fi of Joshua Dalzelle, then buy this book. Great action, amazingly crafted science, and a cleverly conceived story. Harris could have developed the principal characters a bit more, which would have made the book longer and possibly more engaging. Another top-drawer performance by Kafer. Keep it coming!

Good story with great twists

Grabs you by both ears and doesn't let go. Fast pace with excellent characters and laugh out loud comedy. Sinks the hook deep at the end for what comes next.

I highly recommend this book!

I listen to a lot of military sci/fi that’s actually almost all I listen too, I really enjoyed this book and the series. It reminded me a lot of Ryk Browns books but between the two I enjoyed these more, Jeffrey Kafer does a great job narrating and it’s a good story. One of the things I enjoyed the most with these books was that there really wasn’t any foul language, I have little kids and it’s hard to listen to books when there’s a ton of cursing, thank you Tori L. Harris!

Short.

Seems like half a story. Very slow beginning. I will however get the next book in the series.
