Intriguging and Horrifying
Nicholas, Amy, and their friends have arrived at a safe haven with other humans. However, the creatures are changing and one of them is determined to become the leader to who leads to destroy the humans and take away Troy’s humanity. Who will win?
The author, James Brown, smoothly picks up where he left off. The group of humans seeking to survive and making their last stand is electrifying. The drama of being hunted by humans by bloodthirsty creatures is not new, but what is new and enhances the storyline is the relationships. The scariest nightmare anyone has to face – losing one’s humanity and loved ones – is truly horrifying! Brown vividly portrays Troy’s recognizing his powerlessness to stop the impending doom and watching everything unfold. The plot twists, dialogue, and character development keep the story moving forward at a quick pace. As a young adult horror genre, Brown captures the fears and desires of this age group accurately.
The narrator, Kerr Lordygan delivers a steady performance with intentionally placed pauses emphasizing the action and emotions of the narrative. He provides a consistent voice for each character as we move through the trilogy. He speaks clearly and with passion. I love that he uses his voice for sounds! I had to smile when he made non-verbal sounds as I hate sound effects as they often overwhelm the presence of the narrator. His use of his voice to make those unique sounds was awesome and did not interfere!
This audiobook compellingly and entertainingly highlights the unique contrast between relationships, humanity, and horror. Highly recommend this trilogy!
