About this listen

Following a mysterious explosion, the offices of Excelsior Joinery Company are no more; the three directors are killed and the peace of a quiet town in Surrey lies in ruins. When the supposed cause of an ignited gas leak is dismissed and the presence of dynamite revealed, Superintendent Littlejohn of Scotland Yard is summoned to the scene. But beneath the sleepy veneer of Evingden lies a hotbed of deep-seated grievances. Confounding Littlejohn's investigation is an impressive cast of suspicious persons, each concealing their own ax to grind.

Quite a clever story. Interesting characters however the narrator was too loud and far too involved with his characters voices. It was like being force fed. He has a wide range of voices but I’m more than capable of creating the scene in my minds eye with a simple schooled voice. Thanks anyway.

Awful over the top narration.

I didn't feel any interest or sympathy for the many narcissistic, corrupt, or vicious characters in the story. The police were the good guys doing meticulous and plodding detection. They encountered only villains and their dupes in multiple shady deals. I have enjoyed other classic detective stories by this author, but found this one tedious and depressing.

Involved classic detective story

A marvelous plot! Loved the character of Littlejohn. All the intrigue is very contemporary. Great book

Apparently, Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple had a love child named George Bellairs. Just loved this story.

Perfect narration for a good listen

A very entertaining read. Coupled with a great narrator, it makes for a great read.

Excellent Cozy Mystery

The narration of this book was so poor as to make it painful to listen to. I have enjoyed listening to other George Bellairs books with a different narrator so this was esp disappointing.

Narrator awful

Stick figures sort of wandering about. Inspector’s chief ability seems to be smoking his pipe. Good white noise for those nights you just can’t fall asleep.
