About this listen

"Why do I have to have moral issues with killing someone? I feel like such a hypocrite! It's worse than a vegetarian touting organically grown steaks." (Eric, physics teacher, involuntary vampire, and part-time demon slayer)

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in. Luckily for Eric he can rely on his trusty steed and her unwavering support, his flaming sword and its sarcastic wit, and his own snarky sense of humor.

Amazing Epic Story

Garon Whited's Nightlord is an excellent story. The world building is complex and interesting. Whited did an amazing job creating rich and complex characters, worlds, and plots without weighing any of the elements down. This is a true skill few authors possess.

Nightlord is a true adventure and I greatly look forward to future tomes. Follow Eric through a transformation and journey of a lifetime.

Sean Runnette is a wonderful narrator and adds richness and a sense of wonder to the story that is completely complementary.

Immortality Issues

I have 633 books in my audible library and Garon Whited's Nightlord series is in my top favorites.

Narration: Our narrator is Sean Runnette covering 423 entries on audible at this time. Notably he also covers all of Mark Tufo's books and falls into the higher tier of audio narrators. His pronunciations are always on point and I have never caught any poor audio mark. He is also able to capture the audio range well from male to female and young to old as well as regional inflections.

Sunset is an epic tale logging in near 40hrs of highs, lows and humorous moments with this first book being just the beginning. What you will not be getting a fan fiction hack and slasher where the hero has a harem so reader beware.

Our hero(Eric) is a normal blue collar college professor that is living a simple and content life as part of his American dream. He is an intellectual that enjoys learning and teaching as many professors do with little to no aspirations of grandeur or wealth as he chose to go into higher learning. You have likely encountered a similar soul during your college career.

Eric is a man, a professor and a (nightlord)vampire that has to deal with a new reality but retrains himself without doing a massive character shift that could have happen with many in his place. He also has to deal with Immortality Issues of time moving forward and trying to keep the natural balance. But like many hero's journey greatness is pushed on him and all he wants is to be left alone to do with own thing. Most of the book is set in medieval fantasy setting the Eric learning and exploring this world. Garon does have the habit of crushing your soul with his endings so you will not be getting a happily ever after, just a FYI.

You might have noticed Vampire, urban fantasy and fantasy words used tied to this series but to be clear this is not a paranormal romance. The few romantic interludes all have a point and are done in a classy way. These vampire do not sparkle, are not the horror creations from 30 days of night or 13 bullets. We are also not looking at phycological tension found in Fevre Dream or The Historian. Lastly these Nightlords are not the action packaged pulp fiction Kurtherian Gambit or CW turned to eleven Demon Accords. All of those have their place and enjoyable to the correct audience. The Nightlord vampire are tied to the natural order set into motion by the powers at be. They have more powers and weaknesses then many other incarnations I have seen. That said the framework is fairly open for exploration as is the true backstory of the Nightlords.

This book also plays with the Stargate, Super Natural and Star Trek idea of the adventure / monster of the week with a multiverse system. The great thing about this is that the adventure could be endless or until the author determines he wants to conclude the story.

Also keep an eye on the Sasha story as I believe there is a greater mystery that could unfold with it.

Finally a original concept on the old Vampire Legend

I definitely like the new spin on the Vampire Legend? Myth? That is what keeps me interested. All great stories seem to have a hint of truth among them. People want to believe! We always want our imagination to carry us from the world of the mundane into the world of what if. This is a finely written, finally read book. I am sad it ended, excited to hear more. Kudos to both to all involved in the making of this story of fiction? Reality?...

Excellent in every way

Well worth the time and money. I am now waiting for the 5th book (hopefully?) the story seems unfinished. Lots of unanswered questions

Witty and Smart

Narration was on point. The quirky humor was the best part of this listen. Honestly, the ending was more than a bit lacking, but it is understandable that the author wants to get the reader anticipating the next book in the series. Overall, this was good. It took me weeks to finish, so it wasn't the most addictive story. I am on the fence as far if I want to purchase the next book. I guess it depends on the reviews. :)

Good story, although a little disjointed at times

Would you listen to Nightlord again? Why?

I already have the the 2nd purchased!

Any additional comments?

I generally like Sean Runnette as a narrator, but he didn't seem to fit the style of the book for me personally.
